The organization is currently hiring a Staff Software Engineer, PostgreSQL to join its Datastore team. This group acts as the central repository and foundational data model for brain data gathered from clinical studies, serving internal scientists, clinicians, and external partners.
The position centers on backend systems, data infrastructure design, and scaling. Rather than building user-facing frontend applications, the engineer in this role will focus on PostgreSQL data models, Kafka event streams, and GraphQL APIs. There are two distinct focus areas within this hiring initiative: a Datastore Systems profile emphasizing event-driven pipelines, APIs, and overall platform breadth, and a PostgreSQL & Data Modeling profile focusing on deep database operations, performance tuning, and schema evolution.
Day-to-day expectations involve driving technical design for complex projects, authoring RFCs, troubleshooting across system boundaries, and mentoring team members. Qualified applicants should possess extensive backend development experience with a strong background in data platforms and infrastructure. The role operates on a fully remote basis within the United States, supported by asynchronous work practices alongside optional physical office locations in Boston, New York City, and Paris.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture and technical design for complex projects and systems within the Datastore
- Partner with product managers, scientists, and clinical stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable integrations and services
- Debug and profile multi-system issues that extend beyond the Datastore environment
- Draft requests for comments to direct feature discovery and technical design phases
- Mentor other engineers, provide actionable feedback, and potentially act as a technical lead on projects
- Improve operational robustness and ease of use through new documentation, tools, and dashboards
Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years of backend development experience
- At least 3 years dedicated to data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications
- Production experience with PostgreSQL as an application database, including query writing and tuning
- Hands-on background with data streaming and event processing using Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis
- Proficiency in Julia or Python
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments with Kubernetes and infrastructure as code tools like Terraform or Helm
Qualifications
- Prior experience using Julia
- Familiarity with GraphQL and TypeScript or Node.js for interface development
- Experience with LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production settings
