Job Description
Slate Magazine is hiring a full-time, on-staff Staff Writer whose work will span the magazine, with a home on the life section. The role is for a reporter who can find fresh angles on cultural and news questions, come up with and refine story ideas, track down sources and connect them with original reporting. The position can be based in New York or Washington, D.C., and remote applicants with strong profiles are also considered.
Writing responsibilities include fast reporting on the questions readers care about each week, along with longer features that the writer would develop over time. The staffer would publish one or two shorter stories a week in response to the news while advancing longer projects. Topics might include social trends, political life, relationships, religion, education, food or internet culture, and the writer's own interests would shape the beat. The writer would also work as part of a broader team that moves between politics and culture coverage.
Candidates need at least five years of writing and reporting experience, preferably with feature work. Slate looks for a sharp, witty and provocative style, confidence in carrying out ideas, strong online research skills and a willingness to chase leads. A union contract with the Writers Guild of America East applies to this role, and the posted pay range is $80,000 to $105,000 a year. Health coverage offers three subsidized medical options and two dental options through Aetna, and flexible spending accounts can be added.
