These roles are not traditional writing jobs; instead, authors take a leadership stance in documentation efforts across engineering, business operations, and other company departments. The organization publishes Ubuntu and leads open source software initiatives for AI, IoT, and cloud technologies. Depending on their focus, authors may join product engineering teams to shape user experience, work within customer success or field engineering to handle complex software deployments, or support business teams like legal and HR by maintaining internal handbooks.
Selected candidates collaborate within a dedicated documentation practice team to advance writing standards using the Diátaxis approach. Applicants can choose their preferred focus area during the application process to match their experience and skills. Canonical operates globally with team members working remotely, while requiring international travel twice annually for company events.
Responsibilities
- Create, maintain, and improve software and other types of documentation
- Partner with team members to facilitate effective documentation contributions
- Influence product and service design and function as an expert user
- Engage with user communities to ensure documentation satisfies user needs
- Encourage and support community participation and content contributions
- Standardize the structure, language, style, and presentation of content across products
- Collaborate with documentation peers to advance company documentation standards
- Challenge and improve best practices and understanding of documentation within a disciplinary team
Requirements
- Excellent collaboration and communication abilities
- Strong focus on functional written communication
- Background as a technical writer with a programmer mindset or a programmer with a history of producing strong documentation
- Track record of community involvement in open source software, research, documentation, or related fields
- Familiarity with open source software needs and community challenges
- Demonstrated technical curiosity and interest in software technology
- Demonstrated documentation skills, enthusiasm, and insight
- Experience working in software development environments
- Familiarity with Linux, command-line operations, Git, Sphinx, and reStructuredText
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks for events
Qualifications
- Hold a BA or BSc degree or equivalent
- Deep technical domain knowledge
- Open-source community leadership and management experience
- Experience in user experience, interaction, or visual design
