GES Teacher Recruitment November 2026: 8,000 Posts, Requirements and How to Prepare

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to open its next teacher recruitment window in November 2026, for the first of two new cohorts of 8,000 teachers. As of 19 October 2026, GES has not published an exact opening date, the portal link or the final eligibility guidelines. If you are a trained teacher waiting for posting, the most useful thing you can do now is get your licence, national service certificate and scanned documents ready, because the last window filled up within hours.
What has been announced so far
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu told a press briefing in Accra on 20 July 2026 that government had approved the recruitment of 16,000 additional teachers, to be taken on in two cohorts of 8,000 each. He said the President and the Finance Minister had signed off on the plan and that the first window would open in November 2026.
Total approved: 16,000 teachers, split into two cohorts of 8,000.
First window: November 2026. No exact date has been given yet.
Second cohort: later, with no confirmed date.
Priority areas: deprived and underserved districts come before the big urban centres. The minister named Sissala, Sanguli and Fumbisi as examples of areas expected to benefit.
Start of work: reports differ. Graphic Online reported that teachers recruited in the first window would start in January and February 2027. Later reports point to around April 2027. Treat any start date as provisional until your appointment letter states one.
Why competition will be tight
The November exercise follows the 2026 round, which GES ran in April. That round covered about 7,000 teachers for GES, plus about 3,000 staff for technical and vocational education (TVET), according to GES spokesperson Daniel Fenyi. The minister said in late July that more than 40,000 people applied for the 7,000 GES places within 24 hours. He has also said Ghana needs somewhere between 50,000 and 90,000 more teachers, so 8,000 places will not clear the backlog.
In practice, this means you should be ready to apply on the first day the portal opens rather than waiting until the deadline.
Who is likely to be eligible
GES has not yet released the guidelines for November. The rules for the April 2026 round give a good idea of what to expect. That round required applicants to:
be in good standing with the National Teaching Council (NTC) and hold a valid teaching licence, which means passing the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination;
hold a Bachelor of Education, or a relevant first degree plus a PGDE, PGCE or Diploma in Basic Education (diploma holders who had completed the required teaching practice could also apply);
have completed national service and hold a valid National Service Certificate;
be willing to accept a posting to a deprived district.
Which batches will be considered is still unclear. Early reports said the 8,000 places would be reserved for College of Education graduates from the 2023 and 2024 batches. Then, on 30 September 2026, Mr Fenyi reportedly said the batch-by-batch approach for College of Education graduates had not been scrapped, and that the November exercise was meant to clear a backlog of university graduates who are still waiting for posting. Do not rule yourself in or out until GES publishes the official guidelines.
Documents to prepare now
In April, applicants uploaded their documents as images or PDFs. Getting these scanned now saves time and avoids upload failures on the day:
Academic certificate(s), or your result slip if your certificate has not been issued.
NTC licence (Teacher Licensure Certificate).
National Service Certificate. If you are still waiting for yours, see our guide to the NSS posting and national service process.
Ghana Card.
A recent passport-size photograph.
Birth certificate.
Your SSNIT number, if you have one.
A working phone number and email address that you check every day.
Tip: keep each scan clear and well under a few megabytes, and name the files plainly (for example, ntc-licence.pdf). In July, some applicants complained on radio that documents they had uploaded went missing from their profiles. Save copies of everything, and take screenshots of each completed page before you submit.
How the application is likely to work
The April 2026 application ran online between 10 and 17 April. The steps below follow that process. GES may change some details for November.
Wait for the official GES announcement, which will give the portal link and the deadline. In April, Graphic Online reported the portal as gesrecruitment.gedp.tech. Check the link against GES's official channels before entering any details.
Choose your applicant category: University graduate, College of Education graduate or Diploma.
Fill in your personal details, qualifications, NTC licence details and national service information.
Upload your documents.
Review every field, then submit and print or save your confirmation slip.
Check your application status on the portal when GES announces it. In July, results were released by sector: early childhood and primary first, then JHS and SHS.
If you are selected, collect your appointment letter and report to your assigned district office with your original documents for verification.
Postings depend on your subject, the vacancies available and district needs. You may be posted outside your preferred region, and deprived areas are the priority.
Scam warning: no one can sell you a GES slot
Every recruitment season brings people who claim they can secure a "protocol" slot or a guaranteed posting in exchange for money. GES has warned applicants to avoid middlemen and unauthorised agents, and to rely only on information from its official channels and the office of its spokesperson. Keep these points in mind:
Do not pay anyone who promises to "push" your name or guarantee your posting.
Do not share your Ghana Card number, portal password or SSNIT details with "agents" on WhatsApp or Telegram.
Check any portal link or "shortlist" against the official GES website and GES's verified social media pages.
Submitting false information or forged documents leads to immediate disqualification.
Frequently asked questions
When will the GES recruitment portal open in 2026?
The Education Minister has said the next window opens in November 2026. As of 19 October 2026, GES had not announced an exact date.
How many teachers will GES recruit in November 2026?
The first cohort is 8,000 teachers. It is part of 16,000 approved positions, with a second cohort of 8,000 to follow later.
Do I need an NTC licence to apply?
Yes, based on the April 2026 rules. Applicants had to be in good standing with the National Teaching Council and hold a valid teaching licence.
Is the November recruitment only for the 2023 and 2024 batches?
That has not been confirmed. Early reports mentioned College of Education graduates from the 2023 and 2024 batches. A later GES statement, as reported, linked the November round to university graduates in the backlog. Wait for the official guidelines before deciding.
Do I have to pay to apply for GES recruitment?
No official GES statement we have seen mentions an application fee. Treat anyone asking for money to secure a slot or posting as a scammer.
Next steps
Get your documents scanned this week and check your NTC licence is valid. Then follow GES's official channels so you can apply on day one. While you wait, browse teacher jobs on Jobsiz and other jobs in Ghana, including openings in Accra. Private schools often recruit at the same time. If you are applying to private schools as well, our guides on how to write a resume and writing a job application letter will help.
We will update this article when GES publishes the November portal link and guidelines. Last checked 19 October 2026.
