Ministry of Health Recruitment 2026: What We Know About the Next 8,000 Health Jobs

Ghana's Ministry of Health has not yet opened applications for the next round of health worker recruitment. On 19 October 2026, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said the Ministry is waiting for financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance before it starts recruiting a further 8,000 health professionals, the second half of its 16,000 target. He said "very soon" but gave no date. Nurses, midwives and other health professionals who finished training between 2021 and 2025 and are still unemployed are the group he named. Until the Ministry announces that its portal is open, nobody can apply, and nobody can sell you a slot.
What the Ministry has said so far
The plan has been built up through several statements over the year. Here is the order they came in:
April–May 2026: The Ministry received financial clearance to recruit about 8,000 health professionals. Its portal opened on 4 May 2026 and was rolled out region by region until 15 May.
18 May 2026: The Ministry's Director of Human Resource for Health Development said more than 7,200 people had been placed. Successful applicants were to start work on 1 July 2026.
16 July 2026: At a durbar in Ho, President John Mahama said the Ministry was cleared to open the portal for 16,000 nurses in two batches of 8,000.
29 July 2026: In Parliament, the Health Minister said the 2021 batch of nurses and midwives was being absorbed, that the 2022 batch would be recruited before the end of 2026, and that the 2023 batch would follow once financial clearance was secured.
3–5 October 2026: The Ministry ran a mop-up exercise to fill posts left empty by recruits who did not report to their stations. It covered 429 nursing slots (266 in teaching hospitals, 133 in CHAG facilities and 30 in the Ghana Health Service), plus 5 pharmacist and 31 pharmacy technician slots.
10 October 2026: Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe Addo told the Ghana Health and Labour Summit at Legon that the government plans to recruit 16,500 health professionals in 2026. She said clearance is secured before recruitment so that new staff are paid from the start.
19 October 2026: The Minister said the Ministry is waiting for clearance to recruit the remaining 8,000.
How the first 8,000 slots were shared out
The second phase may not use exactly the same split, but the first phase shows which roles the Ministry put first. The May 2026 clearance was divided like this:
Nurses and midwives: 6,500 slots (6,245 filled by mid-May). Community Health Nurses, Public Health Nurses and Nurse Assistant Preventives were given priority.
Allied health professionals: 900 slots (771 filled).
Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians: 250 slots (235 filled).
Physician assistants: 300 slots, all filled.
Slots were shared out according to staffing gaps reported by the Ghana Health Service, the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), Ahmadiyya Health Services and the Mental Health Authority. Districts with the worst shortages, many of them rural or underserved, received more slots. This links to the government's Free Primary Healthcare policy, which focuses on preventive and community care.
Who is likely to be eligible in the second phase
No eligibility notice has been published for the next 8,000 slots yet. Going by the Minister's statements, the main target is health professionals who completed training between 2021 and 2025 and are still waiting for employment, with older year groups ahead of newer ones. The Ministry has said it cannot clear the backlog in one go. Its own estimate is more than 105,000 unemployed health professionals.
When the official notice comes out, check three things before anything else: the year groups it covers, the cadres it covers, and the regions or districts where slots are available.
How the portal worked last time
In May, the Ministry used an online portal and opened it to different regions on different days. More than 53,000 records were uploaded and about 29,900 accounts were started, but 2,636 applicants never finished their profiles. Many people also reported that slots in their region were gone within minutes. Once someone had a slot, interviews and checks of their certificates and professional documents took place at district level before they were engaged.
The October mop-up used the portal address mohrecruitment.com, as reported by Graphic Online. Before you enter any details, check the address against the Ministry of Health's own announcement.
How to prepare now
Keep your professional registration current. Make sure your licence or PIN with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Pharmacy Council, Allied Health Professions Council or other regulator is valid. Lapsed registration could hold you up at district verification.
Scan your documents. Have clear PDF or image copies of your certificates, transcripts, professional registration and national ID ready. Last time, profiles were filled in under time pressure.
Finish your portal profile early. If you created an account in May, log in once the portal reopens and complete every field. Incomplete profiles cost some applicants their chance.
Be open about location. Underserved districts got more slots. If you are willing to work outside the big cities, you have a better chance of finding an open slot.
Get your news from official channels. Follow the Ministry of Health website (moh.gov.gh) and its official statements, which are usually signed by the Ministry's spokesperson. Do not rely on WhatsApp forwards.
Report once posted. The October mop-up was held because some recruits did not report to their assigned facilities. Those slots went to other applicants.
Beware of "protocol" and slot-selling scams
Recruitment into Ghana's public health service is free. In May 2026, the Ministry said it had worked with security agencies because of reports of fraud and illegal fee collection, and that some people were under investigation. If anyone asks you for money to "secure" a slot, a "protocol" list place or faster financial clearance, walk away and report them to the police or the Ministry. Never share your portal login or one-time codes.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Ministry of Health recruitment portal open now?
No new general recruitment had been announced as of 24 October 2026. On 19 October, the Minister said the next 8,000 slots are waiting for financial clearance. The October mop-up exercise was only for posts left vacant by recruits who did not report.
How many health workers will Ghana recruit in 2026?
The government's target is about 16,000 health professionals. On 10 October, the Deputy Chief of Staff put the figure at 16,500. Around 8,000 were recruited in the first phase, and a second phase of about 8,000 is pending.
Which year groups will be recruited next?
The Minister named professionals who completed training between 2021 and 2025. In July, he said the 2022 nurses and midwives would be recruited before the end of 2026, and the 2023 group would follow once clearance is secured. Check the official notice when it is released.
Do I have to pay to be recruited?
No. The Ministry has warned about fraudsters collecting illegal fees. Anyone who asks for payment to secure a slot is not acting for the Ministry.
What happens after I get a slot?
In the first phase, applicants who secured slots went through interviews and checks of their certificates and professional documents at district level before being formally engaged and posted.
