Oil and Gas Jobs in Nigeria: Fresh Graduate Guide (2026)

If you are a fresh graduate hoping to work in Nigeria's oil and gas industry, there are four things that matter more than anything else: create and complete a profile on the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board's NOGIC JQS portal, target the structured graduate programmes and internships that operators and service companies run each year, build hands-on technical and safety skills while you wait for the next intake, and never pay anyone for a form, a test or a job. This guide explains how each route works in 2026, who qualifies, when the application windows have been opening, and how to tell a real recruitment from a fake one.
Key takeaways
The NOGIC JQS portal (nogicjqs.gov.ng) is the industry's official skills database. The NCDMB says operators and service companies look there first for Nigerian manpower, and registration for individuals is done online with no fee mentioned on the portal.
Most 2026 graduate intakes from major employers opened between April and May: Shell's window closed on 25 April, Renaissance's on 13 May, the NCDMB Field Readiness call on 26 May, and Dangote Refinery announced its 18-month programme in early May.
Typical requirements are a Second Class Upper degree (some programmes accept Second Class Lower or HND Upper Credit), a completed NYSC year, no more than three years since graduation, and an age cap of 28 to 30 where one is stated.
Service-company internships such as SLB's Port Harcourt technical internships are often open with no closing date, which makes them the most realistic starting point outside the annual windows.
No major oil and gas employer in Nigeria charges an application fee. Any "processing", "medical" or "training" payment request is a scam.
Why oil and gas hiring in Nigeria looks different in 2026
The names at the top of the industry have changed. Shell completed the sale of its onshore subsidiary, the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), to the Renaissance consortium on 13 March 2025, after approvals from the Federal Government. Renaissance Africa Energy now runs its own graduate programme and technician recruitment, while Shell continues to recruit graduates in Nigeria for its remaining businesses. At the same time, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos has started hiring graduate trainees at scale, and the NCDMB has launched a long-term training push to replace skills the industry currently imports.
For a job seeker, the practical effect is that there are more doors than there were five years ago, but each one opens for a short period and expects you to be ready with documents, a complete JQS profile and a clean CV. The sections below take the routes one at a time.
Step 1: Register on the NOGIC JQS portal
The Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Joint Qualification System (NOGIC JQS) is a portal operated by the NCDMB under the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act. It holds the industry's database of Nigerian companies and skilled individuals. In September 2025 the Board's Executive Secretary, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, told young people in Port Harcourt that only registered individuals are considered for the Board's skill-development programmes and that operators look at the database first when they need Nigerian manpower.
The portal matters for a second reason: when the NCDMB opened its 2026 Field Readiness Training Programme, the only way to apply was through a NOGIC JQS account. Registration follows the steps below, taken from the portal's own individual guideline.
Go to nogicjqs.gov.ng and choose "Create an Individual Account".
Fill in your surname, first name, date of birth, email address, mobile number, nationality, a username and a password, then submit and wait for the on-screen confirmation.
Open the welcome email and click the activation link, then log in with your email address and password.
Complete every profile section: Basic Data, Educational Qualification, Industry Certification, Job Experience and Skills, and upload copies of all your academic certificates.
Keep the profile current. The portal states that account holders may be nominated or shortlisted for training if their skills match, and may be notified about job opportunities.
The portal does not mention any registration fee for individuals. If a website or agent offers to "fast-track" your JQS registration for a price, walk away. For questions, the portal lists support@nogicjqs.com and 07000062362 as its official contacts.
Step 2: Know the entry routes and what each one asks for
Graduate programmes at operators and the refinery
These are the most competitive route and the one most graduates picture. They run on annual cycles, and the 2026 editions tell you what to expect in 2027.
Shell Graduate Programme 2026 (Nigeria): a three-year programme recruiting post-NYSC graduates in engineering (chemical, petrochemical, mechanical, civil, production), geoscience and commercial roles. Applicants needed a bachelor's or master's degree, less than three years of work experience and a completed NYSC year. The window closed on 25 April 2026, and Shell warned that submitting more than one application disqualifies all of them.
Renaissance Graduate Programme 2026: open to graduates in engineering, computing and IT, geosciences and the natural and applied sciences with at least a Second Class Upper and a completed NYSC year (or an exemption certificate issued no earlier than 2023). Applications were free, went through the careers section of renaissanceafrica.com and closed on 13 May 2026.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery Graduate Trainee Programme 2026: an 18-month programme announced in May 2026 with technical tracks (chemical, production and mining engineering, geological and laboratory sciences, biochemistry), technical-support tracks (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and power engineering) and support tracks (accounting and finance, social sciences, humanities, business administration, law and IT). The minimum was a Second Class Lower degree or HND Upper Credit, and applicants could not be older than 28 on 31 May 2026.
NNPC Limited Graduate Trainee track: NNPC recruits through careers.nnpcgroup.com, which has separate Graduate Trainee and Experienced Hire paths. Applications were closed at the time of writing. The portal's own checklist says you will need a working email and phone number, your birth certificate, state-of-origin certificate, passport photograph, secondary and tertiary certificates, National Identification Number (NIN), NYSC certificate and any professional membership certificates.
Internships at service companies
Service companies carry out drilling, well services, logistics and maintenance for the operators, and they take on far more early-career technical staff than the operators themselves. SLB (formerly Schlumberger) is currently advertising graduate technical internships in Port Harcourt across three tracks: Field Engineer Intern for engineering degree holders, Field Specialist Intern for engineering HND holders, and Mechanical and Electrical/Electronics Technician Intern for HND or technical certificate holders. All three ask for a minimum Second Class Upper or Upper Credit, a completed NYSC year and no more than three years since graduation. There is no published closing date, which makes this the kind of role you can apply for today. Our separate SLB Port Harcourt internships guide walks through the application step by step.
Government-backed training: the NCDMB Field Readiness Programme
In October 2025 the NCDMB unveiled an Oil and Gas Field Readiness Training Programme intended to prepare more than 10,000 young Nigerians for roles the industry currently fills with expatriates, including subsea engineering, underwater welding, control and automation, production and maintenance engineering, QA/QC, geoscience and digital skills. The announcement set the eligibility at Nigerians under 35 with an OND, HND or BSc in a relevant field, with monthly stipends, protective equipment, medical clearance and insurance for trainees.
The first call, run with Renaissance Africa Energy, opened in May 2026 for applicants below 30 with an HND, BSc or BEng in engineering, sciences or technology, and closed on 26 May 2026. Applications were made only by logging into a NOGIC JQS account and registering for the programme. Training for the first 300 graduates (240 in Lagos and 60 in Port Harcourt) began in July 2026 and runs for 12 months: three months in the classroom followed by nine months of on-the-job training with partner service companies, in mechanical, electrical and instrumentation engineering as well as software, networking and cybersecurity. The NCDMB has not announced the next intake at the time of writing, which is exactly why a complete JQS profile matters: the Board notifies registered users when a programme opens.
Indigenous service and marketing companies
Nigerian-owned firms in engineering, pipeline construction, gas processing and petroleum marketing run their own trainee schemes, often announced on LinkedIn and the companies' websites rather than in the press. Oilserv, for example, closed its Graduate Trainee Programme 2027 on 10 October 2026, and Sahara Group keeps a graduate talent pool open with no fixed closing date. These programmes are usually less crowded than the operator schemes, and they count as genuine industry experience on your JQS profile. Our graduate trainee programmes in Nigeria guide covers how these selection processes work in general.
Who is eligible? The requirements that keep coming up
Degree class: Second Class Upper (2:1) or HND Upper Credit is the standard bar at Shell, Renaissance and SLB. Dangote Refinery accepted Second Class Lower (2:2) in 2026, so a 2:2 does not shut every door.
NYSC: every programme above required a completed NYSC year or a valid exemption certificate. If you are still serving, use the year to position yourself: an energy-sector place of primary assignment is a real advantage, and our NYSC PPA guide explains how postings and redeployment work.
Time since graduation: Shell capped work experience at three years, and SLB caps time since graduation at three years including the NYSC year. Graduate programmes are for early careers, not for people who have been working for a decade.
Age: Dangote set 28 and the NCDMB set 30 (35 in the original 2025 announcement). Shell, Renaissance and SLB did not state an age limit.
Discipline: engineering, geoscience and the physical sciences dominate, but Shell's commercial track and Dangote's support track show that accounting, law, business and social-science graduates are also recruited in smaller numbers.
Documents: degree certificate or statement of result, NYSC certificate or exemption letter, a government-issued ID or international passport, and a one-page CV in PDF were the standard asks in 2026.
When to apply: what the 2026 calendar tells you about 2027
Dates move from year to year and nothing below is a promise about 2027, but the pattern in 2026 was clear enough to plan around.
Shell Graduate Programme: applications closed 25 April 2026.
Renaissance Graduate Programme: announced early May, closed 13 May 2026.
Dangote Refinery Graduate Trainee Programme: announced 7 May 2026, age cut-off date 31 May 2026.
NCDMB Field Readiness Training: call published in May, closed 26 May 2026; training started July 2026.
Oilserv Graduate Trainee Programme 2027: closed 10 October 2026.
SLB graduate technical internships: open with no closing date as of late October 2026.
In other words, the second quarter is the heavy season for the big names, and smaller firms fill in the last quarter. If you graduate or finish NYSC in the coming months, aim to have your JQS profile, scanned certificates and a tailored CV ready before March 2027, and set alerts on the employers' official careers pages, LinkedIn pages and verified social accounts rather than waiting for a blog to repost the advert, by which time the window may be a week old.
How to use the waiting months well
Finish your JQS profile properly. Half-complete profiles cannot be evaluated. Upload every certificate, list your final-year project under skills and add any SIWES or NYSC industrial experience under job experience.
Get hands-on. The NCDMB built its training around mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and digital skills because those are the skills the Board identified from companies' expatriate quota applications. Short practical courses in instrumentation, PLCs, CAD, Python or data analysis, and a basic health, safety and environment (HSE) awareness course, give you something concrete to talk about in an assessment.
Do not buy "mandatory" certificates. No graduate programme above required an offshore survival or HSE certificate before applying. Employers that need them arrange and pay for them after hiring. Shell's own scam notice specifically lists HUET and HSSE training fees as things it never asks candidates to pay.
Look beyond the operators. Service companies, engineering contractors, refineries, gas processors and marketing companies all hire graduates. Browse current oil and gas jobs in Nigeria and engineering jobs in Nigeria on Jobsiz to see who is actually recruiting this month.
Fix the CV. Most programmes asked for a one-page PDF. Keep it factual, put your degree class and NYSC status near the top, and use our CV format guide or the free Jobsiz resume builder to produce a clean, ATS-friendly document.
Where the jobs are
Head offices and the commercial, finance and IT roles sit mostly in Lagos, which is also where the Dangote refinery and 240 of the first 300 NCDMB trainees are based. Field, drilling and maintenance roles concentrate in Port Harcourt and the wider Niger Delta, including Warri and Bonny, and SLB's technical internships are listed in Port Harcourt. Many field roles work rotations, such as the 21-days-on, 21-days-off pattern Renaissance advertised for its technician positions in September 2026, so be honest with yourself about whether swamp or offshore postings suit you before you apply. You can filter openings by city on our Lagos jobs and Port Harcourt jobs pages.
What about salary?
We cannot give you a reliable entry-level pay figure, and you should be wary of any website that claims to. None of the 2026 graduate programmes above published a salary or stipend, and the NCDMB said only that Field Readiness trainees would receive a monthly stipend without naming the amount. Oil and gas pay in Nigeria also varies enormously between an international operator, an indigenous service company and a marketing firm, so an "average" is close to meaningless. Treat pay as something to confirm at the offer stage, and judge an entry-level programme first by its training content, its certifications and the employer's record of retaining trainees.
How to spot a fake oil and gas recruitment
They want money. Shell states publicly that it never requests payments for insurance, visas, work permits, HUET or HSSE training or "special offers", and that it does not use employment forms or process CVs sent outside its official websites. Renaissance stated its 2026 application was free. The NOGIC JQS portal mentions no fee. Any payment request is the end of the conversation.
The domain is wrong. Official addresses end in nogicjqs.gov.ng, ncdmb.gov.ng, careers.nnpcgroup.com, renaissanceafrica.com, shell.com.ng or jobs.shell.com. A ".com.ng" copy of an agency name, a Google Form, a Telegram group or a WhatsApp number is not an official portal.
The advert resurfaces out of season. A "Shell graduate form 2026" circulating in October, six months after Shell's window closed, is recycling an old advert to harvest data or fees.
They promise a slot. Every programme above said only shortlisted candidates would be contacted. Nobody can sell you a place, and Shell and Renaissance both disqualify multiple applications, so "applying through an agent as well" can cost you the real one.
Frequently asked questions
Is NOGIC JQS registration free?
The portal's individual registration guideline does not mention any fee. You create the account yourself online, activate it by email and upload your certificates. Treat anyone charging for registration as a fraudster.
Can I get an oil and gas job in Nigeria with a 2:2?
Yes, though your options narrow. Dangote Refinery's 2026 graduate trainee programme accepted a Second Class Lower or HND Upper Credit, and many indigenous service companies set the same bar. Shell, Renaissance and SLB asked for a Second Class Upper in 2026.
Do I need to finish NYSC before applying?
For the graduate programmes and internships covered here, yes. Shell, Renaissance, SLB and the NCDMB all asked for a completed NYSC year or a valid exemption certificate. Industrial attachments for current students are a separate route and depend on your institution's SIWES arrangements.
Is there an age limit?
It depends on the employer. Dangote Refinery set 28 for its 2026 intake and the NCDMB Field Readiness call set 30 (the broader 2025 announcement said under 35). Shell, Renaissance and SLB did not state an age limit, though Shell's three-year experience cap and SLB's three-years-since-graduation rule limit how late you can apply.
When will the next NCDMB Field Readiness intake open?
The NCDMB has not announced a second intake at the time of writing. The first cohort started in July 2026 and runs for 12 months. The 2026 call was open for only a few days and applications went solely through NOGIC JQS, so a complete profile is the only way to be in position when the next one comes.
