Zambia Teacher Recruitment 2026: Status, Requirements and Next Steps

Short answer: As of 19 October 2026 there is no open public advert for new government teaching posts in Zambia. The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) paused the 2,000-teacher intake it advertised in April 2026 and says those candidates will be folded into a larger 3,500-teacher recruitment planned for this year, after credential checks by the Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) and the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ). If you are a trained teacher, the best use of this waiting period is to get your TCZ registration, results confirmation and documents ready so you can apply the day the next advert appears.
What has happened so far in 2026
Teacher hiring in Zambia has moved in several steps this year, and some of the information circulating online mixes up the different intakes. Here is the order of events, based on official and published reports:
February 2026: In an address to Parliament, President Hakainde Hichilema said the government would recruit 2,000 teachers and 2,000 health workers during the year, and put the number of teachers hired since his administration took office at 41,917 (Lusaka Times).
17 April 2026: The TSC published its advert titled "Recruitment of Teachers for the Year 2025", inviting applications online through the TCZ teacher portal or by EMS post via ZAMPOST. Applications closed on 27 April 2026 (official TSC advertisement, PDF).
Late April 2026: Officials said this 2,000-post intake would be followed by a further 3,500 teachers in a 2026 exercise, and that the advert would also build a national database of teacher applicants for future planning (Open Zambia).
August 2026: TSC chairperson Daphne Chimuka told Phoenix News that the 2,000-teacher exercise had been suspended while the Commission works out how many more teachers to employ, following a presidential directive to recruit unemployed teachers identified during campaign rallies. Candidates already picked by District Human Resource Management Committees are to be absorbed into the planned 3,500 intake (report republished by Zambian Politics).
9 October 2026: Opening the 14th National Assembly, the President said more than 42,000 teachers had been recruited and that the government will continue recruiting teachers and building teacher housing (full address, Lusaka Times).
What the suspension means for applicants
If you applied in April 2026
Your application has not been cancelled. According to the TSC chairperson, people already selected at district level will be carried over into the bigger intake. Before anyone is appointed, the Commission says it will verify credentials: provincial administrations help compile beneficiary lists, the TCZ confirms each person's registration, and the ECZ authenticates academic results. Only those who pass these checks are to be employed. Keep your TCZ account active and your phone number reachable, and follow updates from the Ministry of Education and TSC rather than social media lists.
If you did not apply in April
No date for a fresh advert has been published. Government has signalled further recruitment, but until the TSC issues a new advertisement there is nothing to apply for. Any message claiming that a "2026 teacher recruitment portal" is open, or offering a guaranteed place for a fee, should be treated as a scam.
Requirements from the most recent official advert
A new advert may change details, but the April 2026 TSC notice is the best guide to what you will be asked for. General requirements were:
Zambian nationality and age 18 or above. Applicants over 45 had to show NAPSA contributions and prove they would reach at least 15 years (180 months) of contributions by the statutory retirement age.
Registration with the Teaching Council of Zambia.
Completed professional teacher training from an accredited college or university.
Willingness to work anywhere in the country for at least four years before asking for a transfer.
Proof of payment for confirmation of Grade 12 results with the ECZ (a non-refundable K10 fee).
One application only, to one district. Multiple applications led to disqualification.
Minimum qualifications by level
Early childhood education: Grade 12 certificate or GCE with five credits including English, plus a three-year diploma or two-year certificate from an accredited teacher training college.
Primary school: Five credits including English, Mathematics and a science subject, plus a three-year teaching diploma.
Secondary school: Five credits including English (a merit in a teaching subject was an advantage), plus a three-year diploma or four-year degree. Priority was given to teachers of natural sciences, mathematics, design and technology, practical subjects, ICT, science and Zambian languages.
Applicants with disabilities: Four credits including English, an accredited diploma or degree, TCZ registration, and registration with the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities or a disability certificate from a registered medical doctor.
How to prepare now
Check your TCZ account. Log in to the TCZ teacher portal and make sure your registration, qualifications and contact details are current. Officials have urged teachers to update credentials before applying.
Scan your documents as PDFs. Grade 12 certificate, certified professional qualifications, NRC, TCZ registration certificate and, where relevant, proof of disability.
Know how the ECZ results confirmation fee works. In the last exercise it was paid through mobile money or the SchoolPay website, and the receipt was attached to the application.
Choose your district carefully. You can apply to one district only, and transfers are rarely granted within the first four years.
Plan for the offline route if needed. Applicants without internet could use post office internet services or send a physical application by EMS to the District Education Board Secretary's office of their chosen district.
Look beyond government posts. Private and mission schools hire throughout the year. Browse teacher jobs in Zambia and other current vacancies in Zambia on Jobsiz, and tidy up your CV format and job application letter while you wait.
Watch out for recruitment scams
Teacher recruitment attracts fraudsters every year. Keep these points in mind:
The only fee in the last official advert was the K10 ECZ results confirmation charge, paid through official channels. Nobody can sell you a teaching post or a "shortlist" place.
Official adverts come from the Teaching Service Commission and are shared through the Ministry of Education and the Teaching Council of Zambia. Be wary of WhatsApp forms and look-alike "application portals".
The TSC advises reporting any corruption in recruitment to the Anti-Corruption Commission on toll-free 5980 (Airtel) or 211 237 814.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Zambia teacher recruitment for 2026 open?
No. As of 19 October 2026 there is no open TSC advert. The April 2026 exercise closed on 27 April and was later suspended so that it could be merged into a planned 3,500-teacher intake.
How many teachers will Zambia recruit?
The TSC has spoken of a 3,500-teacher intake this year, which will absorb the 2,000 candidates already selected. The final number has not been announced.

Yes. Registration with the Teaching Council of Zambia was a general requirement in the last advert, and the online application is made through your TCZ portal account.
How much does it cost to apply?
In the April 2026 exercise the only charge was a non-refundable K10 fee to the ECZ for confirming Grade 12 results. Anyone asking for more money is not part of the official process.
