Job Description
One Acre Fund, operating locally in Kenya under the brand Tupande, supports millions of smallholder farmers by providing essential farm supplies, accessible credit, modern agronomic training, and agricultural services. Tupande is preparing to expand its High Value Crop Production programme for the Long Rains 2027 season and is seeking an individual Agronomist Consultant for Chilli, Groundnut, Sunflower, Soybean, and Chia production.
This consultancy engagement requires up to 15 days of effort in total, which includes approximately 3 to 4 weeks of core work ahead of the season. The consultant will report to the High Value Crop Production Lead or a designated representative. The core responsibilities include drafting a comprehensive technical production manual, reviewing existing extension materials, leading a staff training bootcamp for around 20 production and field staff, and providing as-needed in-season technical support.
Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of Kenya and hold valid registration with relevant professional bodies where applicable. All work products belong to the organization, and strict confidentiality of non-public information is required. The role demands product-neutral recommendations based on active ingredients or specifications rather than specific brand names.
Responsibilities
- Draft a crop technical production manual covering overviews, varieties, planting windows, yields, site selection, soil requirements, crop stages, standard input packages, pest and disease libraries, and harvest standards within up to 5 days
- Review planting cards, farmer guides, staff training presentations, and quizzes against the technical manual within up to 3 days
- Train roughly 20 production and field staff during a two-day bootcamp, including field sessions and an end-of-bootcamp assessment
- Provide up to 5 days of in-season technical support to address pest and disease outbreaks, at-risk fields, and recommend manual updates
Requirements
- Degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field
- Proven, direct experience with at least one of the five target crops (Chilli, Groundnut, Sunflower, Soybean, or Chia) gained through field work or research
- Practical knowledge of crop pest and disease management within Kenya
- Experience writing crop manuals, production guides, or technical standards
- Experience working alongside smallholder farmers to translate technical recommendations into practical field advice
- Experience training field staff or extension workers
- Citizenship or permanent residency in Kenya
- Valid registration with the relevant professional body in Kenya where applicable
- Full disclosure of any current or recent financial, employment, consultancy, or advisory relationships with input companies, crop buyers, or processors from the past three years
Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field
