Job Description
Canonical is recruiting a full-time Associate Linux Support Engineer who can work from anywhere in the world. The post suits a practical engineer who wants to grow a career in Linux support. The job centres on resolving technical support cases for Ubuntu and open source software across cloud, desktop and IoT environments. The engineer works from a home office and deals with issues ranging from cloud triage and server or desktop failures to operating system configuration faults and root cause investigations.
In practice, the engineer takes ownership of each case from first triage to resolution, accepting new requests by phone, email and web. Other duties include keeping internal colleagues informed, meeting the agreed service level for each case, setting realistic expectations, handing cases to colleagues or senior engineers when needed, and writing or updating knowledge base articles. The engineer also drafts technical notices, learns how Ubuntu's development cycle affects when fixes arrive, and joins a weekend rota on a regular basis.
Applicants should hold a first degree in a technical discipline, or be able to explain a clear alternative route, and show a habit of going well beyond what is asked. Linux troubleshooting experience, such as gathering logs and stack traces and modifying configuration files, is required. The engineer also needs hands-on familiarity with at least two of the following: Linux server administration, programming basics, networking, or virtualisation and cloud concepts. A person who learns fast, copes well under customer pressure and writes clear English will fit in well. A background check is part of the hiring process.
Canonical has worked remotely since 2004 and brings teams together in person for sprints twice a year. Travel for company events of up to two weeks happens about twice annually.
