PlanetScale is expanding its marketing team and seeking a remote Brand Designer to shape and evolve the visual identity of its database platform. The company provides reliable Postgres and MySQL database solutions to developers and organizations globally, supported by investors including a16z and Kleiner Perkins. In this position, you will translate intricate technical concepts into engaging visual narratives for technical decision-makers and developers.
The successful candidate will handle a variety of creative tasks, ranging from digital web graphics and marketing initiatives to merchandise design and in-person event experiences. You will collaborate closely with marketing leadership to expand the corporate visual identity, maintain design guidelines, and establish cohesive design systems. Ideal applicants are self-directed, possess strong communication skills, and are comfortable balancing high-level conceptual thinking with detailed execution.
Total compensation includes a base salary ranging from $170,000 to $220,000 USD per year, combined with benefits and equity. Responsibilities
- Design web graphics including technical diagrams, illustrations, and interactive visual assets to simplify database concepts
- Create visual systems for product launches, marketing initiatives, and campaigns across digital, print, experiential, and merchandise formats
- Develop environmental branding, booth graphics, and signage for community events, meetups, and conferences
- Produce merchandise items, banners, stickers, posters, and other promotional collateral
- Design website components, landing pages, data visualizations, social media graphics, and blog imagery
- Build templates and design systems to support team efficiency
- Collaborate with marketing leadership to evolve the brand identity while maintaining coherence and documenting design decisions
Requirements
- Portfolio demonstrating versatile design capabilities across digital, print, and experiential projects
- Deep understanding of foundational design principles such as typography, color, composition, and visual hierarchy
- Familiarity with incorporating AI into design workflows and building processes around it
- Capability to work in both brand and production modes from big-picture thinking to execution in details
- Strong communication abilities to articulate design choices and accept direction
- Self-directed project management skills to handle multiple competing deadlines
- Collaborative approach to incorporate feedback while sustaining creative vision
