Job Description

Sezzle Bank is establishing a de novo national bank in Nevada, currently in formation as a wholly owned subsidiary of Sezzle Inc., to support its financial product offerings and retail payment solutions. The organization is seeking a dedicated Chief Risk Officer to independently build and direct the second-line risk management infrastructure. This executive will act solely for the banking entity rather than holding a concurrent position at Sezzle Inc., answering directly to the President of Sezzle Bank along with the Board Risk and Compliance Committee.

The incoming leader will spearhead enterprise-wide risk strategies, establishing policies, boundaries, and overall risk culture across credit, market, liquidity, and operational areas, including legal, compliance, technology, and model risk. Responsibilities also involve serving as the principal liaison for the OCC Examiner-in-Charge, functioning as the designated Community Reinvestment Act Officer, and supervising the Compliance, BSA/AML, and Information Security leadership. This opportunity suits an experienced banking executive with a history of direct interaction with federal regulatory bodies and the creation of comprehensive risk frameworks from inception.

Responsibilities

  • Design and enforce enterprise-wide risk strategies, policy frameworks, and risk appetite limits in coordination with the Board and the Board Risk and Compliance Committee
  • Identify, measure, and supervise risk exposures throughout the banking institution, ensuring adherence to Board-approved thresholds
  • Evaluate potential risks tied to new product initiatives and verify that business plans align with supervisory expectations and regulatory rules
  • Establish and oversee a model governance structure incorporating independent model validation
  • Contribute an independent second-line perspective as a participant in ALCO
  • Manage the primary relationship with the OCC Examiner-in-Charge alongside the Bank President, handling regulatory correspondence and exam activities
  • Administer the CRA Strategic Plan, track performance targets, and maintain exam readiness as the designated CRA Officer
  • Supervise the Chief Compliance Officer and second-line compliance risk management operations, including regulatory requirements and complaint handling
  • Direct the BSA Officer to guarantee proper design and efficacy of BSA, AML, and OFAC controls and risk assessments
  • Oversee the Chief Information Security Officer to safeguard customer data and technological assets with routine Board reporting
  • Deliver risk reporting directly to the Board and the Board Risk and Compliance Committee while partnering with business line leadership

Requirements

  • Fifteen to twenty-plus years of background in banking or financial services, with extensive focus on risk, credit, compliance, or audit
  • Minimum of seven to ten years serving in a senior risk leadership role such as CRO or SVP Risk at a regulated financial institution
  • Direct working background with federal banking regulators including the OCC, FDIC, or Federal Reserve, and familiarity with examination procedures
  • Expertise in enterprise risk management structures, banking regulations, and second-line governance principles
  • Proficiency in managing compliance, BSA/AML, OFAC, CRA, and cybersecurity risk programs
  • Proven experience delivering risk communications at the Board level
  • Demonstrated ability to use Claude or comparable large language model tools for enhancing productivity, research, and communication

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or Mathematics
  • Master's degree
  • FRM, CERP, CAMS, CRCM, or CPA professional certifications
  • Background in model risk governance and CECL or stress testing frameworks
  • Prior experience with de novo bank formation or developing a second-line risk department from the ground up

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Unlimited paid time off, volunteer hours, and sabbatical
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and short-term or long-term disability insurance
  • Discounted LifeTime gym membership
  • 401(k) retirement plan with matching contributions
