Job Description
This is a full-time Cloud Engineering Manager job with Canonical, open to people working remotely anywhere. It sits within the BootStack group, which builds and runs platforms on private infrastructure for customers, spanning container orchestration and OpenStack-based clouds. The manager leads the engineers who keep customer environments running under a managed service arrangement, covering service requests, operational work and ongoing engineering to improve the product.
The job is mostly about leading people and delivering on time. The manager is expected to lift the speed and quality of engineering and operations output, watch team health measures, and bring in structured engineering and operations routines. Keeping the group aligned on priorities, milestones and deliverables is central, as is meeting the service agreements that apply to customer deployments in many regions. The manager also speaks for BootStack in dealings with stakeholders, customers and other teams, and works closely with customer-facing staff, product engineers and operations staff.
The role suits an engineering leader who has shipped software in a language such as Python, Go, C, C++ or Java, or who has run operations teams, and who has hands-on OpenStack experience. Comfort with distributed teams and agile methods is expected, as is the ability to reason about complicated distributed systems and cloud platforms. Travel of roughly 20 percent or less is part of the job, for team gatherings, company events and customer visits. Canonical is the company behind Ubuntu and serves cloud providers, chip makers and large organisations in many industries. Most staff work from home, and the company keeps only a small number of office-based roles.
