Job Description
Finix builds the global operating system for fintech, focusing initially on payments and processing tens of billions of dollars annually for companies ranging from startups to publicly traded enterprises. Founded in 2015 and headquartered in San Francisco, the organization has raised over $200 million in funding. The company is currently seeking a Compliance Director, High-Risk to partner directly with internal commercial groups on front-end initiatives involving new merchants, sectors, and partners.
In this position, you will act as the primary compliance resource for Sales, Partnerships, Underwriting, and Payment Operations. Your focus will center initially on the gaming and gambling vertical, including sports wagering, iGaming, and sweepstakes, before extending into other restricted sectors such as wellness, CBD, nutraceuticals, and digital services. You will shape underwriting standards, formulate risk-tiering frameworks, establish approval checkpoints, and draft operational procedures that allow the business to onboard merchants securely while complying with applicable laws, card network rules, and sponsor bank guidelines.
This role suits an experienced compliance professional who can balance growth objectives with risk management, navigate regulatory ambiguities, and offer timely, well-documented direction to cross-functional teams. Additionally, the individual will assist in mentoring Compliance Operations personnel and support network and sponsor bank relationships.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary compliance partner for Sales, Partnerships, and Underwriting to deliver prompt guidance on prospective deals
- Direct compliance strategy for the gaming and gambling vertical, conducting state and provincial regulatory reviews alongside licensing and merchant eligibility assessments
- Design and maintain underwriting standards, risk-tiering structures, approval gates, and escalation paths for restricted sectors
- Evaluate new sectors, business models, and market structures including marketplaces, ISVs, and merchant-of-record frameworks
- Author operational procedures, onboarding playbooks, and guides for high-risk verticals
- Translate statutory requirements, card network regulations, and sponsor bank stipulations into clear directives for Product, Technology, Sales, and Operations teams
- Collaborate with Payment Operations to optimize onboarding workflows and eliminate bottlenecks without compromising controls
- Mentor and develop the Compliance Operations team through feedback, document reviews, and performance standards
- Liaise with sponsor banks and payment networks regarding onboarding approvals, due diligence, and program reviews
- Contribute to anti-money laundering, sanctions, and fraud initiatives from the business perspective
- Assist with audit readiness, policy revisions, and regulatory exam preparations related to merchant risk
- Track regulatory and card network changes across the United States and Canada to update internal guidance
- Draft concise summaries for senior management, sponsor banks, and partners
Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in risk, regulatory, or compliance functions within banking, payments, fintech, or related heavily regulated industries
- Demonstrated hands-on background handling merchant onboarding and underwriting, including know-your-customer frameworks and risk-based approvals
- Direct familiarity with high-risk merchant verticals such as gambling, nutraceuticals, or CBD, together with their governing card network and sponsor bank rules
- Proven ability to translate regulatory guidelines and network policies into practical applications for real business models
- Comprehensive grasp of risk management controls and sponsor bank oversight expectations
- Direct working history alongside sales, business development, or product teams during new market entries and deals
- Experience creating operational policies, procedures, and manuals utilized by business units
- Track record of steering complex, cross-functional projects involving senior stakeholders
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to convert ambiguous scenarios into actionable plans
- Proficiency using Google applications or Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor or law degree with active bar admission in good standing
- Familiarity with gaming and gambling regulations, encompassing state licensing, vendor registration, and eSweepstakes frameworks
- Knowledge of United States frameworks including FinCEN, state money transmission, and the California Consumer Privacy Act
- Acquaintance with Canadian frameworks such as FINTRAC, RPAA, PIPEDA, and Quebec Law 25
- Experience dealing with payment networks like Visa, Mastercard, Interac, and Discover
- Familiarity with the fintech-bank partnership model and third-party risk expectations
- Prior background working at a sponsor bank, card network, acquirer, or payment processor
- Professional credentials such as CAMS or CFE
