Job Description

OpenAI is seeking a Controls Engineer for its Power Generation team to design and integrate automation technology for on-site power infrastructure that supports large artificial intelligence data center campuses. The Data Center Engineering group builds scalable infrastructure by managing everything from early design phases to operational readiness. In this full-time remote position, the chosen candidate will manage control architecture across generation packages, microgrid controls, electrical protection, balance-of-plant systems, and facility monitoring.

The role requires managing control-system design and integration while traveling up to fifty percent of the time. Responsibilities span the entire lifecycle from initial concepts through factory testing, field commissioning, performance tuning, and operational enhancements. Qualified candidates must have significant engineering experience in power generation, industrial facilities, or mission-critical environments.

OpenAI operates as an artificial intelligence research and deployment organization focused on making general-purpose AI beneficial to humanity. The company emphasizes safety, human needs, and diverse perspectives across its operations, and maintains an equal opportunity employment policy.

Responsibilities

  • Define control architecture, functional specifications, operational sequences, cause-and-effect matrices, alarm philosophy, and interface requirements
  • Integrate OEM controls, PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, historians, microgrid controllers, protection systems, and data center BMS or EPMS platforms
  • Develop and review input and output lists, network topologies, control narratives, graphical interfaces, alarm thresholds, interlocks, permissives, and fail-safe operations
  • Manage synchronization, load sharing, islanding, black starts, load shedding, restoration, and transition modes between generation and data center operations
  • Evaluate cybersecurity measures, system redundancy, time synchronization, communication protocols, data quality, and remote support needs
  • Lead or participate in software evaluations, simulation tests, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, system commissioning, and tuning
  • Investigate control-system and plant performance issues to implement corrective measures and establish reusable engineering standards
  • Collaborate across electrical, mechanical, construction, IT, security, operations, OEM, EPC, and data center controls teams

Requirements

  • Eight or more years of engineering experience in controls, automation, or instrumentation within power generation, industrial plants, utilities, or mission-critical infrastructure
  • Proficiency with PLC, DCS, SCADA, historical data systems, industrial networking, and control integration
  • Working knowledge of generation controls, synchronization, load sharing, protective interfaces, process control, and safety interlocks
  • Demonstrated ability to create functional specifications, operational sequences, I/O lists, alarms, graphics, and test procedures
  • Capability to troubleshoot issues across software, instrumentation, electrical, mechanical, communication, and process boundaries
  • Familiarity with industrial cybersecurity, system redundancy, failover mechanisms, and change control procedures

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in controls, electrical, mechanical, chemical, computer engineering, or a related academic field
  • Familiarity with major turbine or reciprocating-engine control platforms and microgrid controllers
  • Experience utilizing industrial protocols such as IEC 61850, Modbus, OPC UA, DNP3, or EtherNet/IP
  • Background in connecting generation controls with BMS, EPMS, DCIM, or utility infrastructure
  • Professional Engineer license, functional safety training, or industrial cybersecurity certification
