Job Description
Abnormal is a technology company that builds behavioral AI solutions to protect enterprises from sophisticated email and collaboration attacks. The organization maintains both commercial and FedRAMP-authorized cloud environments.
The company is seeking a remote Director of Security Engineering to report directly to the Chief Information Security Officer. In this full-time role, the individual will act as the CISO's deputy, leading the Security Engineering organization, building high-performing teams, and driving critical security initiatives. The position requires a technical leader who combines a software engineering foundation with extensive people management experience.
The security team operates under a philosophy focused on removing toil, establishing secure-by-default infrastructure, and collaborating closely with engineering and product groups. Key functional areas under this leadership role include AWS-first cloud security architecture, identity management, detection and response, vulnerability tracking, and federal compliance efforts.
This opportunity is well-suited for an experienced security engineering leader who thrives in a collaborative, automation-focused environment and possesses the executive presence to represent the security organization to customers, regulators, and leadership.
Responsibilities

- Lead, mentor, and expand managers and senior engineers across security engineering and operations
- Design and direct the security engineering roadmap encompassing AWS cloud architecture, detection and response, identity, and vulnerability management
- Partner cross-functionally with Product, IT, and Engineering on initiatives ranging from AI security governance to federal compliance
- Establish and enforce engineering standards for security that prioritize automation and code-based implementation
- Manage hiring pipelines, performance reviews, promotions, and succession planning
- Translate complex technical risks into clear business terms for the board and executive staff
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in security or software engineering
- At least 4 years of experience managing security teams, including management of managers or equivalent scope
- Background in software engineering with a history of shipping production software
- Technical fluency in cloud-native technologies, multi-account AWS governance, Kubernetes, identity and access management, and modern SDLC security
- Proven track record of scaling high-performing security teams and establishing trust with engineering leaders
- Strong written communication skills for producing decision-ready documents and async alignment
- Executive presence capable of presenting to C-level stakeholders, auditors, and clients
Qualifications
- Current experience as a security engineering manager or senior manager within a high-growth startup, fintech, or advanced enterprise
- Experience building paved-path or secure-by-default platforms that decrease developer friction and risk
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001, and FedRAMP without letting compliance dictate the security strategy
- Background in securing artificial intelligence and machine learning systems or governing AI adoption at scale
- Experience operating in resource-scarce environments where automation was necessary to scale
