Job Description
Canonical is recruiting a software engineer to help build its IoT telemetry and connectivity products. The role is full-time, remote and based in the EMEA region. Its focus is dependable, secure data streaming inside the Snappy ecosystem, and the SaaS services that let device builders collect and manage data from their products.
The engineer designs and builds high-throughput APIs for streaming data services in Python and Go, and adds governance, auditing and management capabilities to the telemetry platform. Work also covers cloud-hosted SaaS infrastructure, together with containerised on-premises versions for enterprise customers. The position carries technical leadership: taking features from specification through to production, reviewing code and designs, and setting engineering standards.
Candidates should have built scalable backend services, messaging pipelines and REST interfaces. Cybersecurity expertise for connected devices is emphasised, including secure connectivity, identity and access models, encryption and compliance regimes such as GDPR and HIPAA. Familiarity with Ubuntu as a platform for development and deployment is expected, and background in industrial data exchange is relevant. The engineer should be willing to mentor junior colleagues and work across product and infrastructure teams. Two to four weeks of travel each year, covering internal and external events, is part of the role.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement fast APIs for streaming data services using Python and Go
- Create governance, auditing and management systems for the telemetry platform
- Collaborate with infrastructure colleagues on cloud SaaS and containerised on-premises delivery
- Lead feature development from specification to production at scale
- Oversee technical quality by reviewing code and designs, and establishing standards
Requirements
- Bachelor's-level qualification or equivalent in a computing, STEM or other related field
- Experience designing scalable backend services, messaging pipelines and REST APIs in Go or Python
- Experience building fast, low-latency IoT data platforms that handle heavy traffic
- Knowledge of identity models, encryption, access control and regulatory frameworks such as GDPR and HIPAA
- Familiarity with Ubuntu as a platform for development and deployment
- Ability to mentor engineers and work across product and engineering functions
- Two to four weeks of travel per year
Qualifications
- Experience with data streaming technologies such as MQTT, Kafka or RabbitMQ
- Knowledge of OpenTelemetry for observability
- Familiarity with industrial protocols such as OPC-UA or Modbus
- Understanding of decentralised ownership of data and governance across domains
Core Skills
Benefits
- Remote working with two in-person team sprints each year
- Annual learning allowance of USD 2,000
- Annual pay review and recognition awards
- Annual holiday leave and maternity and paternity leave
- Access to a wellness platform and a team member assistance scheme
- Trips to new locations for colleague meetups, plus Priority Pass lounge access
