Canonical is recruiting a software engineer for its distributed systems testing group. The post is full-time and remote, and the team is responsible for the reliability of cloud products including Juju, Terraform, OpenStack and Kubernetes. These products are exercised in environments that range from bare metal in customer facilities through public cloud platforms including AWS, GCE and Azure.
The engineer builds continuous integration pipelines that run cloud integration tests and generate reports. Responsibilities also include testing products on fresh cloud platforms and building AI and machine learning pipelines that analyse test output. Engineers are encouraged to propose and drive new initiatives inside the team and across the company.
The role suits people who regard quality engineering as a discipline in its own right and who use data to guide testing, automation, reporting and analytics. Solid Python or Go skills, strong object-oriented design, and familiarity with CI tools such as Jenkins, CircleCI and GitHub Actions are expected. Candidates should understand networking and the architecture of Linux systems, and be able to reason through intricate problems. The role includes two to four weeks of international travel each year.
Responsibilities
- Build automated test approaches that check reliability, speed and resilience of cloud orchestration tooling
- Offer distributed-systems testing tools to engineers throughout the company
- Upgrade CI pipelines used to deploy and test cloud-native products like Kubeflow
- Deploy, operate and troubleshoot distributed systems across clouds and bare metal
- Track and report results from automated testing
Requirements
- Sound grounding in contemporary test methods and strategies
- Experience developing in Python or Go
- Strong object-oriented programming skills
- Working familiarity with CI tooling such as Jenkins, CircleCI or GitHub Actions
- Understanding of networking and Linux system design
- Ability to think abstractly about complex problems
- Two to four weeks of international travel annually
Qualifications
- Track record building production-grade web applications
- Experience operating data stores such as key-value systems, relational or document databases, and event buses
- Data gathering and analysis across large multidimensional datasets
- Exposure to AI or machine learning pipelines
- Familiarity with OpenStack, Kubernetes, Terraform or AWS
