Job Description

This remote, full-time engineering post is dedicated to tuning Ubuntu for modern hardware. The work covers the entire Linux stack, from kernel and drivers up to the graphical desktop, and is pitched as fast-moving problem solving across PC and IoT platforms.

The engineer develops the Ubuntu integration for recent IoT and server-class hardware and software stacks. A large part of the job involves working with hardware companies: their specialists bring new capabilities and performance improvements into forthcoming devices, and the engineer helps define the technical plans, test approach and quality benchmarks for each project.

On bigger customer engagements the role may lead the technical side across complete architectures, from cloud infrastructure to edge devices. The engineer also assists customers who are integrating their own applications and SDKs, building device OS images, and getting strong results from workloads on Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server.

Canonical operates as a remote-first company that has done so since 2004 and builds its platform on free software. Applicants should be resourceful, articulate and self-directed. Desired background includes a technical degree or equivalent, experience with Debian, RPM or Yocto packaging, familiarity with open source communities and their licensing, and working knowledge of C and C++. Experience with graphics stacks, networking protocols and containers is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Create the strongest Ubuntu integration for current IoT and server-class platforms
  • Work with partners to give their platforms a refined, optimised Ubuntu experience
  • Help shape partner technical plans, testing strategy and quality measures
  • Lead technical work on complex engagements covering cloud-to-edge architectures
  • Assist customers with app and SDK integration and device image builds

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or equivalent qualification in a computing or STEM field
  • Experience with Linux packaging through Debian, RPM or Yocto
  • Involvement with open source communities and licensing
  • Experience with C and C++
  • Capacity to work productively across a globally spread team, driven by self-discipline

Qualifications

  • Graphics stack experience
  • Networking know-how including TCP/IP, DHCP and HTTP/REST
  • Sound awareness of security best practice for IoT or server platforms
  • Public speaking or strong communication ability
  • Embedded and IoT background covering boards, SoCs, BMCs, bootloaders and firmware through to services
  • Docker, OCI containers or Kubernetes experience

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Fully remote working
  • Annual learning allowance of USD 2,000
  • Yearly pay review and recognition awards
  • Holiday leave each year, parental leave and an employee assistance programme
  • Chances to attend team sprints and visit new locations
  • Priority Pass lounge access and upgrades on long-haul company trips
