Job Description
This senior role focuses on tuning Ubuntu for new silicon within Canonical's embedded engineering work. It is full-time, fully remote and open on a global basis. The engineer works through the Linux stack from the kernel up to the graphical layer, solving problems that cut across PC and IoT technology.
Much of the effort goes into bringing next-generation capabilities and performance gains to hardware that has not yet shipped. The engineer collaborates with specialists at major chip manufacturers and aims to give each partner platform a polished, first-class Ubuntu experience.
Typical tasks include designing and implementing the Ubuntu integration for current IoT and server-class platforms, shaping technical plans, test approaches and quality measures with partners, and taking technical lead on intricate customer projects that span cloud and edge. The engineer also supports customers who integrate applications and SDKs, produce device operating system images, and optimise software on Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server.
The role suits resourceful engineers who communicate clearly, deliver across a range of solutions, and stay motivated while working from anywhere. Canonical presents itself as a free-software company that has operated remotely since 2004 and serves clients in robotics, data centres, telecoms and retail. Relevant backgrounds include C and C++ programming, Linux packaging and an understanding of open source licensing.
