Job Description

This is a full-time, remote Engineering Director role based in the EMEA region, leading the Business Data unit at Canonical. The unit owns internal business systems integrations, a data mesh assembled from popular open-source components, plus configuration work on Salesforce, NetSuite and similar internal platforms. Its work sits at the heart of Canonical's business, supporting data analytics and reporting as well as the company's growth.

The unit is organised as three engineering teams, each led by an engineering manager. The Business Systems team looks after NetSuite, Salesforce and other systems, implements business processes, keeps systems compliant and gives Canonical employees a strong experience when doing their jobs. The Data Lake team builds a data mesh offering secure, well-governed access to datasets from many internal and external sources, relying on open-source tooling like Trino, Ranger and Superset, plus governance tooling it builds. The Integrations team builds links between internal and external systems and brings new data sources into the mesh. It writes Python workflows on the open source orchestration engine Temporal and uses the open source ETL tool Airbyte to bring in data.

The director leads several teams of engineers, from graduates to seniors, develops engineering managers so they maintain Canonical's culture, and sets performance goals with direct reports. Responsibilities include measuring team health and acting on it, owning product roadmaps, hiring strong people, and working with stakeholders and those who use the products. The director also sits on the Commercial Systems leadership group. Applicants need an exceptional academic record and a technical undergraduate degree, or a compelling alternative route. A proven ability to lead large engineering teams to outstanding results is required, along with experience in CRM or ERP systems, Python, data engineering or governance, or distributed integrations. Professional English with excellent presentation skills, a results focus, and international travel up to two weeks, twice a year, are also needed. Performance engineering, DevOps or SRE experience and experience with compliance are nice to have.
