Job Description
Wise seeks an Engineering Lead to direct its Recommend team at the London office. This group focuses on expanding the Wise customer base using word-of-mouth channels and referral programs, guiding users through the entire journey until their initial international money needs are satisfied. The cross-functional team includes software engineers specializing in frontend, backend, and mobile, alongside data analysts and designers.
The person in this position will coach software engineers, shape product and technical strategy alongside the Product Manager, and build scalable platforms for incentivized campaigns. Duties include setting quality standards, maintaining system health, and joining the on-call rotation for critical services.
This role suits an experienced, proactive technologist with a strong product mindset who can lead teams, guide technical architecture, and contribute hands-on coding when necessary.
Responsibilities
- Mentor and coach a team of software engineers while supporting their career growth
- Partner with the Product Manager to define the product roadmap and technical vision
- Direct the technical strategy and delivery for word-of-mouth and referral platforms
- Architect scalable and resilient core technology for incentivized campaigns
- Monitor team health, productivity, and collaboration standards
- Manage hiring and development for the engineering group
- Coordinate with marketing, regional, and product teams across the organization
- Participate in the on-call rotation for critical platform services
Requirements
- Proven background in leading and mentoring software engineers
- Demonstrated experience building customer-facing products with a strong product mindset
- Technical expertise in object-oriented programming languages such as Java
- Experience building and working with distributed, high-scalability, event-driven, asynchronous, and microservice architectures
- Experience with decoupling systems while maintaining business continuity
Qualifications
- Experience working alongside frontend or mobile engineers
- Background in domains related to user virality and complex user interactions
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional peers like data science, designers, and analysts
