Job Description
This is a full-time, remote technical management role leading a team that builds Python and Go microservices for Canonical's global software distribution engine. The same system is publicly known through Snap Store and Charmhub.io, and it understands distribution concepts including architectures, branches, and pre-release and stable builds.
Canonical is working to greatly expand the range of software delivered through the system, which is a highly scalable SaaS product. Load can be very high; one example is the impact when a large Ubuntu Desktop snap is updated by its publisher. The manager leads a remote team in their time zone, with the goal of building tidy web service interfaces for both command-line and browser clients, written in Python and optionally Go. The manager is expected to review code, work with peer managers, product people and architects on a roadmap that is ambitious yet achievable, and set the team's direction and focus. Responsibilities also include coaching, mentoring, feedback and practical career support, fostering a healthy engineering culture and clarifying expectations for other teams and outside stakeholders. The team works with Canonical's security team to deliver the capability safely to customers worldwide. Travel is up to four trips a year for internal gatherings.
The role may sit in time zones across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East or Africa. Applicants need good experience leading modern agile teams, a track record of mentoring and growing people, and a focus on on-time delivery of quality software. They must have software development experience in Python, with Go as a strong plus, plus clear written and spoken communication skills and practical Linux system administration experience. Pay depends on location, experience and skills, and certain roles may also be eligible for annual bonuses or sales incentives.
