Job Description
Mercury is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Bank Accounts team to oversee the systems that handle depository accounts and facilitate money movement between customer-owned accounts. As Mercury establishes its own bank, this group will construct a fundamental component of the infrastructure required to manage customer accounts at scale. The primary objective for this position is to maintain a seamless banking core.
This on-site role involves guiding a team of four to eight senior engineers toward delivering highly available financial services, establishing predictable delivery frameworks, and balancing feature development with system reliability. The manager will collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Risk, Compliance, and Operations groups, as well as handle hiring, onboarding, and mentoring.
The position is suited for leaders with a background in constructing or operating dependable financial, payment, or high-integrity systems, and familiarity with or willingness to learn Haskell and TypeScript.
Responsibilities
- Lead a group of four to eight senior engineers to provide high-availability banking services
- Translate business and product goals into measurable team targets
- Establish a predictable delivery workflow that highlights progress, risks, and trade-offs
- Balance customer-facing enhancements with platform dependability, operational readiness, and long-term maintainability
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to ensure banking products are reliable and clear
- Hire and onboard engineering staff while upholding a consistent interview standard
- Ensure the team implements AI-assisted development responsibly through proper testing, review, and safeguards
- Provide constructive feedback to engineers across all experience levels
- Foster an environment that supports technical and leadership growth
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to lead a technical team
- Experience building or operating reliable financial, banking, payments, or high-integrity systems
- Ability to navigate product, policy, infrastructure, and operational boundaries
- Skill in turning ambiguous challenges into clear decisions, ownership, and execution plans
- Strong technical judgment with the ability to participate in system design and implementation
- Experience developing senior engineers and facilitating leadership opportunities
