Job Description
Discord is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead its Safety ML team, which develops the machine learning systems protecting more than 200 million users. The group aims to help people build real friendships in a space free from harm, at a scale that manual review cannot cover alone.
The manager is responsible for the detection layer that sits between bad actors and everyday users, including real-time and batch models covering content understanding, account health and platform misuse. Duties include recruiting and mentoring ML engineers, setting technical direction and planning, and running production models from inception through ongoing monitoring of the decisions they make every day.
The role coordinates with Trust and Safety on labeling standards, benchmark datasets and reducing manual review work, and collaborates with product, policy, legal and data teams. The manager also contributes to engineering culture by collaborating with fellow engineering managers.
Applicants should have five-plus years in ML roles, such as applied scientist or data scientist, along with three years of managing a team of five or more engineers. Real depth in abuse or fraud detection, content classification, behavioral or graph modeling, or LLM-based classifiers is needed. Responsibilities
- Recruit, mentor and develop a team of ML engineers who take ownership of their work
