Job Description

GitLab operates as an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, helping organizations boost developer efficiency, secure software delivery, and accelerate digital transformation. The company is hiring a full-time Staff Forward Deployed Engineer within the EMEA region to bridge the gap between strategic customer needs and core product execution.

This position is designed for an experienced product or platform engineer who can collaborate directly with key clients facing complex technical hurdles, architectural constraints, or AI adoption barriers. Rather than acting as a standard professional services or solutions architecture role, the position requires hands-on technical contributions, including writing production-quality code, fixing bugs, and creating reusable implementation patterns.

The successful candidate will operate at the intersection of high-urgency customer requirements and product engineering. Responsibilities include diagnosing system-wide challenges, advancing agentic software development lifecycle initiatives, and partnering with internal teams such as Product, Engineering, Customer Success, and Support. Professionals who thrive in ambiguous environments, possess strong coding capabilities, and want to turn field learnings into durable product improvements will find this role a strong match.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute production-quality code, bug fixes, features, tooling, and performance improvements to the GitLab product and adjacent systems.
  • Engage directly with strategic customers experiencing high-impact adoption blockers, performance degradation, or scale bottlenecks.
  • Drive governed, measurable, and production-oriented adoption of the GitLab Duo Agent Platform.
  • Coordinate cross-functional resolutions across Product, Engineering, Support, Site Reliability Engineering, Solutions Architecture, and Customer Success teams.
  • Transform field-discovered blockers into durable product enhancements, documentation, reference architectures, and repeatable implementation patterns.
  • Author technical narratives, whitepapers, Well-Architected Frameworks, and adoption strategies to shape industry practices.

Requirements

  • Bring Staff-level experience in building, operating, or improving complex production software systems.
  • Demonstrate experience contributing to large, mature product codebases upholding rigorous standards for testing, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Possess strong Ruby on Rails or Go experience to build directly within the GitLab codebase and adjacent systems.
  • Show background in AI-assisted software development, agentic workflows, model evaluation, AI governance, or prompt design in enterprise settings.
  • Have expertise diagnosing complex system behaviors spanning application code, data stores, networking, infrastructure, observability, and APIs.
  • Understand modern DevSecOps workflows, including Git internals, merge requests, CI/CD pipelines, and enterprise software security controls.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrate direct familiarity with GitLab platforms including GitLab.com, GitLab Self-Managed, or GitLab Dedicated.
  • Hold production experience utilizing Ruby on Rails, Go, PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq, Vue, TypeScript, Kubernetes, Docker, Linux, or observability tooling.
  • Display deep familiarity with Git internals, repository performance, scale-level Git usage patterns, or GitLab Runner behavior.
  • Bring past work creating public whitepapers, technical talks, architecture frameworks, requests for comments, or internal strategy documents.
  • Possess professional background in site reliability engineering, performance engineering, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, or distributed systems.
  • Show history working within open source or highly asynchronous engineering environments.

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Flexible Paid Time Off
  • Team Member Resource Groups
  • Equity Compensation and Employee Stock Purchase Plan
