Job Description
Canonical is hiring a GitOps Engineering Manager for its internal systems (IS) team, which runs Canonical and Ubuntu operations and helps shape its managed application services. The role blends operations management, software engineering, product development and team leadership. The company publishes Ubuntu, which is widely used in enterprise, public cloud, AI and IoT projects.
The post is remote and based in the APAC and EMEA regions. The manager leads a team in their own time zone and answers to a global director who could sit in another time zone. The IS team works across the full infrastructure stack, from physical servers through to container orchestration, covering public cloud, private cloud and edge. Its goal is to automate the processes behind the business and to publish that automation as packages under open licences.
Responsibilities include leading the team's daily agile DevOps practice, representing the IS team to stakeholders, clients and in-house groups groups, and organising and driving internal projects. The manager mentors engineers, tracks team health indicators, and puts structured engineering and operations processes in place. The role keeps the team focused on priorities, milestones and deliverables, meets service level agreements for customer deployments around the globe, and makes sure managed services are delivered consistently and on time.
The ideal candidate has a strong record of delivering software through infrastructure as code, has led DevOps groups running SaaS or comparable products, and understands testing methods and maintainable code quality. Practical grasp of multi-node architectures, plus familiarity with cloud layouts and tooling, and a record of going beyond expectations are expected. An exceptional academic background and readiness to travel twice annually for events lasting up to a fortnight is required. No salary is stated.
