Canonical is hiring a Golang Software Engineer for its Commercial Systems unit, open at any seniority level. The company publishes Ubuntu and supplies open-source software and OS products to enterprise and tech buyers. It has more than 1,200 colleagues in over 80 countries, works with very few offices, and is run as a founder-led and profitable business.
The role is remote in the EMEA region. The Commercial Systems unit is made up of several engineering teams that work closely with other engineering and business groups. Its services sit at the heart of the company's business, and Go plays a central part. The posting highlights three teams as examples. The Billing team builds a service that converts metrics into billable amounts, lets customers view their spend, and connects to payment systems. The Contracts team is building a single source of truth for customer contracts, with structured storage and integrations to CRM and accounting systems. The Livepatch team delivers Linux kernel patches while systems are running, shrinking the window for exploiting serious kernel vulnerabilities.
Engineers design solutions in Go, lead technical designs and code reviews, implement features, and deploy and operate the services they build. They also coach and mentor colleagues, give career feedback, and help shape good engineering and organisational practice. Candidates should have experience developing software in Go, a strong academic record and a first degree in a technical field, or a clearly argued non-standard path. Professional English, presentation skills, a drive to meet commitments and travel twice a year for events of up to two weeks are expected. - Able to go abroad twice annually for events lasting up to a fortnight
