Job Description

Planet is a space and data company that designs, builds and operates a satellite imaging network it describes as the largest of its kind. Customers in commercial, environmental and humanitarian fields receive its data through a cloud-based platform. Because the company handles hardware design, manufacturing, data processing and software engineering in-house, its teams draw on many technical disciplines.

This full-time, remote role in the United States is for an Infrastructure Solutions Engineer on a small, multi-disciplinary team that simplifies Planet's infrastructure for other engineering groups. The work is largely hands-on: the engineer is often the first contact when a team runs into an infrastructure problem, and is expected to clear the blocker, plan migrations, write modules and documentation, and cut down on repeated questions.

The position suits an experienced infrastructure engineer who can both run a system and build one, and who is comfortable working inside other teams' repositories and problems. A senior engineer supports the team on ambiguous work. The posting says the company values delivering well beyond what was asked for. Candidates near a Planet office are expected to work from it three days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main contact for infrastructure requests from other engineering teams, clearing urgent blockers and routing complex issues to core platform owners
  • Run complex workload and storage migrations between cloud environments, including proofs of concept, configuration ports and reusable playbooks
  • Deliver scoped technical work within team engagements alongside capability owners and internal partners
  • Build infrastructure tooling in Go and Python, including Terraform modules, Helm charts, CLIs and client libraries
  • Write technical documentation, runbooks and worked examples to reduce repeat support questions
  • Create observability dashboards and reports that show teams their infrastructure cost, capacity and usage

Requirements

  • At least four years in platform engineering, DevOps, system administration, site reliability engineering or another infrastructure-focused discipline
  • Degree at bachelor's level in a related field
  • Hands-on experience running and troubleshooting Kubernetes workloads in production
  • Experience on a public cloud, ideally Google Cloud Platform
  • Infrastructure-as-code work with Terraform or Crossplane, plus GitOps with Helm or ArgoCD and GitLab CI/CD pipelines
  • Coding skill in Go or Python to build automation and internal tools
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects to completion and share technical updates across team boundaries

Qualifications

  • Background in supporting software engineers through developer enablement, platform support or internal tooling
  • Work with large-scale block storage such as GCP Persistent Disk, Hyperdisk or Ceph
  • Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools such as Temporal, or with large-scale batch data pipelines
  • Some exposure to configuring enterprise observability tooling and telemetry practices

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Medical, dental and vision plans
  • Health Savings Account with company contribution
  • Generous paid time off, plus holidays and company-wide days off
  • 16 weeks of paid parental leave
  • Wellness program and Employee Assistance Program
  • Home office reimbursement and monthly phone and internet reimbursement
  • Tuition reimbursement and access to LinkedIn Learning
  • Commuter benefits for employees local to an office
  • Volunteering paid time off
  • Possible eligibility for discretionary short-term and long-term incentives, including bonus and equity
