In this hands-on individual contributor position, you will develop models determining which auto insurance carrier an insurance shopper views on the click wall, routing users to the carrier most likely to convert. You will also manage media spend buying models constrained by ROAS and incorporate carrier conversion data into production. The role requires scoping problems with the business, gathering data, building and validating models, and handling deployment and monitoring alongside an ML engineer.
Success in this role involves taking charge of insurance marketplace media buying by day 60, implementing click wall serving, integrating carrier conversion data into production models, scaling automated marketplace bidding, and addressing repeat users, sparse sessions, and market drift. Most of the company operates on East Coast hours.
Responsibilities
- Build models to route auto insurance shoppers to the most relevant carrier on the click wall
- Own media spend buying models that are held to ROAS
- Integrate carrier conversion data including quotes, policies, and acquisition costs into production models
- Frame data problems directly with the business
- Source data, build, validate, deploy, and monitor models independently
- Scale automated marketplace bidding from proof of concept
- Develop approaches for repeat users and sparse sessions
Requirements
- At least 5 years of hands-on applied data science experience resulting in measurable business impact
- Demonstrated experience building models that drove paid media decisions such as spend, bidding, or ad serving
- Ability to explain resume projects down to the loss function and architecture choice, including neural network fundamentals
- Experience handling late labels, sparse features, or market drift
- End-to-end model ownership from data sourcing through deployment and monitoring
- Expert-level skills in Python and SQL
Qualifications
- Experience with real ad budgets spent in live auctions
- Familiarity with large-scale ranking or recommendation systems
- Skill in explaining technical tradeoffs to non-technical partners in plain terms
- Background in designing for auction feedback loops, selection bias, and exploration
- Hands-on work with neural networks like embeddings for text, creative, or user behavior
- Experience with AWS for data science including ECS, S3, Athena, and SageMaker
- Familiarity with CI/CD deployment
