Job Description
GiveDirectly is recruiting a Legal Counsel for Corporate and Business Affairs to build its business affairs legal capacity and act as a principal legal adviser to its worldwide teams. The lawyer helps shape complicated corporate, commercial, funding and charitable arrangements and works with product, technology, finance, people, communications, grants, fundraising, partnerships and public affairs colleagues.
The work includes major partnerships and deals, unusual donations such as bequests, donor-directed funds, restricted donations, securities and crypto, nonprofit compliance questions, and rules on charitable appeals, lobbying and political activity. The counsel prepares and negotiates gift terms, funding documents, technology and supplier agreements, and builds templates and playbooks so routine matters move faster.
An early top priority is designing the legal and regulatory framework for data partnerships, mobile network operator data and remote delivery. The counsel collaborates with the Global Data Partnerships group, Product and program teams to turn that framework into workable models for individual countries, drafting NDAs, data-sharing terms and memoranda of understanding, and supporting talks with regulators and government counterparts.
Candidates must be licensed attorneys with post-qualification corporate, commercial and deal-making experience, plus substantial data privacy knowledge covering consent, data exchange and sensitive personal information. The job calls for comfort with unfamiliar frameworks (including nonprofit and fundraising rules), independent management of a varied caseload, supervising outside experts, strong negotiating ability and fluent English. Experience with data protection regulators, telecom authorities, planned giving or tax-exempt law is preferred. The role is fully remote, requires at least three hours of East Africa overlap and involves about one to two trips a year. No visa sponsorship is available for US or UK roles. Pay is 134,400 dollars in the US, 91,900 pounds in the UK and 106,280 dollars in Kenya, plus a 10 percent target bonus and an annual benefits stipend.
