This Manager, FP&A - R&D role is an individual contributor finance partner for the CTO and engineering organization, and also for the CCO organization, which spans services delivery, help desk, enablement and customer success. The remit covers R&D spending plus the direct and indirect expenses of building and supporting the products.
The philosophy here is simple: establish what took place, judge its importance, and steer the company toward its next step. A major focus is the economics of cloud infrastructure. Working with engineering and the Tech/FinOps team, the manager traces how architecture, product design, customer behavior, capacity and consumption feed into unit costs and gross margin, and looks for ways to make that math better over time.
The role also applies a productivity lens to research and customer-facing groups. It shows how staff and capacity get used, which results they produce, and where leverage can improve. What drives services margin, utilization and cost to serve falls within the remit too. Requirements
- Real working command of cloud infrastructure economics for SaaS, covering consumption drivers, unit costs and margin effects.
- Roughly five to eight or more years of steady work in FP&A, corporate finance, analytics, FinOps or an adjacent field.
- Experience at a privately backed or pre-listing enterprise software business sized $300 million to $1 billion, or something very close.
- Experience working alongside heads of Tech/FinOps, product, technology or engineering.
- Clear grasp of software gross margin and what it costs to serve customers.
- Strong modeling skills, including working with messy or incomplete operational data.
- Enough technical curiosity to speak credibly with engineers and keep probing past the first answer.
- Persuasive communication with senior leaders, working as an individual contributor.
