Job Description
Polar is looking for a senior platform engineer to work full time from a remote location on the foundation that runs its billing product. The company is reimagining billing for businesses that sell usage-based software, offer programmable pricing or deploy AI agents. Its work includes real-time metering, pricing defined as code, and customer identity models that give developers more control over how they earn revenue.
In this position you would shape infrastructure, back-end services and product-facing code alike, deciding when a new abstraction is worth its cost and when a simpler approach wins. Focus areas listed in the posting include making high-traffic systems resilient to growth, refining cloud architecture and infrastructure-as-code, improving the tools engineers use to deploy and debug, and creating reusable building blocks that spare colleagues repetitive operational work. The team also has to turn financial and regulatory obligations into software that is auditable and safe for customer data.
Successful applicants will have built distributed systems or cloud platforms and kept them running in production for a long time. Strong SQL, data modeling and performance tuning matter, as does a security-first attitude. Polar wants engineers who can weigh trade-offs, anticipate how things fail, and take ownership from planning through to incident response. Exposure to payment or billing platforms is a notable advantage. Current tooling includes TypeScript, React and Effect on the frontend, Python with FastAPI and Dramatiq on the backend, and Postgres, ClickHouse and AWS for data and infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Keep high-traffic core services available and quick as demand grows
- Spot bottlenecks on critical paths and plan for graceful degradation
- Refine cloud setup and infrastructure-as-code, adding complexity only when justified
- Improve logging, dashboards, deploy pipelines and incident handling
- Create reusable building blocks and automation that lower operational toil
- Convert financial and regulatory rules into auditable, access-controlled systems
Requirements
- Track record with distributed architectures and cloud infrastructure
- Experience running production systems at scale over the long term
- Solid skills in SQL, data modeling and query optimization
- Practical judgment on trade-offs and failure modes
- Security-minded approach to access control and auditability
- End-to-end ownership, from problem definition through operation
Qualifications
- Background in payment systems or billing platforms, a notable advantage
- Open-source work or personal projects are valued
- Drive to build tooling that speeds up the whole engineering group
