Job Description
This full-time Principal Software Engineer I role is on the Platform Billing Core team in the United States and is listed as on-site. Billing supports Elastic's cloud business across AWS, Google Cloud and Azure in more than 50 regions. The work covers metering based on usage, consumption billing and marketplace connections at large scale.
The Billing Core group is responsible for the data layer that keeps billing accurate, auditable and automated. It works in two areas: usage, which collects and processes usage and cost data that underpins billing and financial reporting, and the billing engine, which turns hourly usage into customer bills and revenue entries. The engineer drives technical direction for this domain and remains hands-on in designing systems.
Duties include building large-scale data pipelines for ingestion, transformation and reconciliation, improving observability and incident response, and owning PostgreSQL data architecture, with a focus on query latency, schema soundness and uptime resilience. The engineer also acts as the main design reviewer across the billing core technology stack, mentors tech leads across the Billing organisation and works with Product, Design, Finance, SRE and Cloud Infrastructure teams on priorities and delivery.
The posting asks for more than eight years in backend or platform roles, with strong Python and PostgreSQL and a record of improving reliability in production. Cloud infrastructure experience across networking, IAM, monitoring and deployment is needed. Subscription billing, metering or finance systems would count in your favour. Pay is base salary only, with a typical starting range of $159,800 to $252,800 USD, or $191,900 to $303,500 USD in select locations. Stock program eligibility and a company-matched 401k are also described.

- Coordinate with Product, Design and Finance teams to agree roadmap priorities
