Job Description
Canonical is hiring Python Engineers through a general application track that covers every team at the company working in Python, at all seniority levels. The role is full-time and remote, and the company notes it has remote Python engineering positions in every time zone. Canonical is a founder-led, distributed firm with over 1,200 people across more than 75 countries. It publishes Ubuntu, a widely used Linux distribution, and offers enterprise open source solutions.
Python is the language of choice for web services and system utilities where working well with other teams and communities matters more than raw speed. Engineers own products that can span several codebases, running on servers, inside Kubernetes clusters, on desktops, or as web backends serving Ubuntu users. Work can include utilities, frameworks, developer tools and pieces of the production pipeline. Engineers are encouraged to contribute to the wider open source community.
Day to day, the engineer writes clean, well-designed and thoroughly tested Python, collaborates proactively with teammates around the world, and debugs problems by producing reliable fixes. The role includes showing technical leadership inside Canonical and in community forums, improving technical documentation to a high standard, and gathering with colleagues at company events twice a year, where travel is involved.
The ideal candidate has an excellent academic record, a degree in computing or a STEM subject or a convincing alternative route, and a habit of going beyond expectations. Experience producing well-structured, maintainable Python, strong attention to detail with an eye on performance, and Linux experience (Debian or Ubuntu preferred) are expected. Professional English and strong communication and presentation skills are required. Helpful extras include container tooling like LXD, Docker or Kubernetes, build systems and cross-compilation, Go, Rust, C or C++, deep test engineering, Flutter front-end work, REST or gRPC APIs, databases, public cloud or OpenStack, Debian packaging, and performance or security engineering. Pay depends on location, experience and performance.
