Job Description
Canonical is hiring Python Engineering Managers for its Commercial Systems unit, working remotely from the EMEA region. The role is full-time. The unit is made up of six engineering teams that work closely with other engineering and business groups, and its services sit at the heart of the company's commercial operations, with Python playing a central part. The company publishes Ubuntu and operates as a distributed, founder-led business with staff in more than 80 countries.
Two of the unit's teams are recruiting managers. The Data Governance team gives people secure, well-governed access to large data sets from many internal and external sources arranged in a data mesh. It uses open source governance tools including Trino and Ranger, defines and runs governance procedures, and makes data widely available across the company. The Integrations team automates SaaS seat management and onboarding, tracks spending across applications, and brings internal and external data into the mesh using open source ETL tools.
The manager is answerable for building out an internal product and leads a group of Python software engineers. Responsibilities include growing the skills of direct reports, improving established processes, designs and solutions, and understanding business needs well enough to deliver the greatest impact. The role calls for drive, a commitment to high engineering standards, and the ability to present clearly.
Candidates should have an outstanding academic record, ideally a technical undergraduate qualification or a well-articulated alternative path, and a history of going well beyond expectations. Experience with a high-level language such as Go, Python or Java is required, along with fluent English and polished presentation skills. Travel internationally twice a year at company gatherings of up to two weeks is expected. Performance engineering or site reliability experience, and prior analytics governance, pipeline or data analysis work, are useful extras. Pay depends on location, experience and performance.
