Job Description

Canonical is recruiting a full-time, remote Python Software Engineer for its Ubuntu Hardware Certification team. The group builds the tools that confirm desktops, laptops, servers and IoT devices operate correctly on Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server. The work sits between hardware and software, so the best fit is a Python developer who is comfortable with physical devices.

The team designs hardware that can probe devices on its own, and builds test frameworks that exercise every part of Ubuntu on that hardware. Engineers maintain and extend Canonical's open source certification tooling, including Checkbox, a Python test automation suite used by in-house teams and hardware partners. Other tasks include building software for in-house test rigs, inventing ways to run remote automated tests, and writing functional and performance tests that support hardware enablement and guard against regressions.

The team is centred on EMEA time zones and collaborates with related groups in the Americas and APAC. Its partners include silicon makers, OEMs and ODMs, with the aim of giving users a smooth, secure experience on new devices. Some international travel for meetings, about two or three times a year, is part of the role. The company describes the job as a chance to improve the Linux experience for millions of users.

Applicants need working knowledge of Python, a quality-minded and pragmatic approach to design, interest in test automation, prior experience with Ubuntu or another Linux distribution, and the ability to be effective in a globally spread team. Useful extras include a hands-on maker mindset, experience with agile teams, hardware testing (IoT work is one example) and familiarity with C. Pay depends on location, experience and skills.
