Pearl Talent is assisting a seed-stage healthcare data startup in finding a Remote Senior Backend Engineer. This organization builds a centralized repository for payer policy data utilized in coverage decisions, supported by healthcare accelerators and the National Institutes of Health. The company gathers and structures over 100,000 medical policies from more than 100 insurance providers, applying AI technology to transform complex guidelines into searchable information.
In this position, you will serve as the technical lead to oversee data infrastructure end to end, scale web scraping platforms, construct large language model workflows to extract medical codes and coverage rules, and enhance reliability for deployments and scraping tasks. You will evaluate code and guide architectural choices for offshore and part-time engineers without direct personnel management duties. Responsibilities
- Scale and construct web scraping platforms to gather policy data from over 100 payers
- Enhance scraper reliability, throughput, and pipeline flow from ingestion to storage
- Develop large language model workflows that convert unstructured policy text into structured searchable records
- Infer, tag, and classify medical codes and procedure coverage statuses from policy language
- Build evaluation and testing harnesses to measure output accuracy
- Construct and maintain CI/CD pipelines for testing and deploying scraper jobs
- Monitor job failures, diagnose root causes, and deploy fixes
- Review pull requests from part-time and offshore engineers and document architectural decisions
- Design and maintain APIs serving normalized policy data to customers
- Support Snowflake-based data products and join occasional customer calls to gather requirements
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems in Python
- Production experience with SQL and PostgreSQL for storing and querying large datasets
- Experience building pipelines that ingest, clean, and normalize messy or unstructured data
- Hands-on experience deploying and running backend services on AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Experience reviewing code and owning architectural decisions on a shared codebase
- English at C1 proficiency for daily video calls and technical discussions with US-based founders
- Full overlap with US Eastern business hours
Qualifications
- Experience building LLM-based extraction or classification with evaluation harnesses using OpenAI, Anthropic, LangChain, or similar tools
- Web scraping at scale utilizing Scrapy, Playwright, or similar frameworks
- Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation pipelines
- Hands-on use of Terraform, FastAPI, or Snowflake
- Exposure to healthcare payer policy data, medical coding including CPT and ICD-10, or prior authorization
