Oklo Inc. is hiring a remote Safety Analysis Engineer to help shape the safety basis for a novel used nuclear fuel recycling facility. Oklo builds advanced fission power plants to generate clean, reliable, and affordable energy at scale, works on domestic radioisotope supply chains, and advances nuclear fuel recycling. The company holds milestones such as receiving the first commercial advanced fission site use permit from the U.S. Department of Energy and submitting the first custom combined license application for an advanced reactor to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
This full-time position suits an optimist and clean energy advocate who thrives in a fast-moving, highly iterative startup setting. The person in this role will identify and assess hazards, determine items relied on for safety, and establish associated management measures. Candidates should enjoy tackling open-ended, non-routine challenges, value efficiency over excessive process, and possess strong written and verbal communication skills. While this role operates remotely, staff are expected to travel to the company headquarters located in Santa Clara, California, twice a year for team meetings, off-sites, and related corporate events.
Responsibilities
- Draft and maintain safety basis documentation aligned with Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines and regulations
- Participate in Integrated Safety Analysis, Criticality Safety Evaluations, Fire Hazard Analysis, and Natural Phenomena Hazard studies
- Pinpoint and assess radiological, criticality, chemical, fire, and natural phenomena hazards
- Evaluate accident sequences employing both deductive and inductive techniques
- Calculate deterministic consequence severity regarding radiological and chemical source terms and doses
- Compute likelihoods using qualitative and semi-quantitative methods like layers of protection analysis
- Designate items relied on for safety to prevent and mitigate potential accidents
- Formulate management measures to guarantee the reliability and availability of safety items
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related field
- Three to five years of professional background working in nuclear safety, process safety, or other high-hazard environments
- Familiarity with Hazard and Operability Study and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis process hazard analysis methodologies
- Ability to travel to headquarters in Santa Clara, California, twice a year for company gatherings
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline
- Experience with NRC licensed fuel cycle facility safety basis development
- Proficiency in consequence severity analysis utilizing tools such as RADTRAD, MELCOR/MACCS, ARCON, and PAVAN
- Competency in event tree and fault tree analysis
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks including NUREG-1513, NUREG-1520, and NUREG-1718
