Job Description

Oklo Inc. is developing fast fission power plants to supply clean, reliable, and affordable energy at scale, alongside advancing nuclear fuel recycling and establishing domestic supply chains for radioisotopes. The organization is seeking a Strike Engineer to join the engineering group remotely. This senior role reports directly to the Engineering Strike Team Lead and focuses on resolving the company's highest-priority and most ambiguous technical challenges.

This position is well-suited for a self-motivated startup professional who thrives in a fast-paced, highly iterative environment and enjoys tackling open-ended problems without rigid structures. The professional transitions smoothly between deep technical work, temporary people management, and project leadership. Responsibilities involve jumping into critical programs, stripping problems down to first principles, designing practical execution plans, and transferring stable scope over to permanent long-term owners.

Please note that remote staff are required to travel to the Santa Clara, California headquarters twice per quarter for company events and team gatherings. In addition, the first two weeks of onboarding must be completed in person at headquarters. Because the position involves access to information restricted by U.S. export control laws, applicants must meet the legal definition of a U.S. person. Employment may be contingent upon a successful drug screening, and employees might be subjected to drug testing under company policy.

Responsibilities

  • Embed within high-priority engineering initiatives to quickly understand systems, limitations, stakeholders, and failure modes
  • Define problems from first principles by separating established facts from assumptions and reducing uncertainty
  • Execute hands-on work across design, analysis, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, software, data, systems integration, and field deployment
  • Create practical execution schedules with designated owners, explicit decision points, risk evaluations, and completion criteria
  • Diagnose operational and technical failures utilizing experiments, data, direct observation, and root-cause analysis
  • Direct projects or teams temporarily when necessary by clarifying priorities, resolving blockers, and coordinating across functions
  • Onboard and recruit permanent project owners while delivering clear documentation and open risk summaries
  • Build reusable technical documentation, processes, tools, and design standards to accelerate future operations

Requirements

  • At least two years of experience addressing complex engineering challenges across definition, design, execution, validation, and handoff
  • Technical breadth spanning multiple domains alongside deep expertise in at least one field such as mechanical, electrical, controls, software, systems, manufacturing, test, thermal-fluid, structural, or nuclear engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to reason from first principles, challenge unsupported assumptions, and validate conclusions through tests or operating data
  • Hands-on competency with tools required to push work forward, including CAD, modeling, calculations, scripting, testing equipment, or prototyping
  • Background in leading cross-functional technical operations without relying on formal authority
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for generating decision records, technical plans, and executive summaries
  • Must meet the definition of a U.S. person under applicable U.S. export control laws

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience working in the nuclear industry, advanced reactor development, commercial power generation, national laboratories, or safety-critical energy fields
  • Experience delivering integrated hardware or systems in quality-controlled or regulated environments
  • Background in launching new programs, recovering stalled projects, or resolving persistent operational issues
  • Familiarity with hardware-software integration, automation, controls, test infrastructure, or data systems
  • Experience hiring, developing, or onboarding engineering talent
