Job Description

WorkWave is seeking a Senior Applied Data Scientist / ML Engineer to transform raw operational data into practical products that help clients make better business decisions. This position is built for an owner who can frame problems, master operational domains, engineer necessary data, deploy models, and track real-world customer impact. This is not a research-only position, internal analytics job, or pure model-building role; deployment, testing, and data engineering are all part of the daily workflow.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong bias toward action and a focus on usability, time to insight, and customer trust. Team members work extensively with coding agents, setting direction, reviewing output critically, and building scaffolding and evaluation frameworks to ship models faster and more safely.

WorkWave operates in a relaxed yet focused environment, valuing impact, trust, and inclusivity. The company offers competitive benefits including pension matching, generous time off, enhanced parental leave, learning resources, and an employee assistance program.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of ambiguous customer problems, determine if machine learning is the correct solution, build the system, and follow through until customers use it
  • Learn domain semantics related to routes, crews, and service histories to ensure accurate modeling
  • Create necessary features directly in Snowflake and dbt
  • Determine how predictions reach customers so they can understand, trust, and act on them
  • Define offline and online evaluations for model quality, drift, and reliability, and design A/B tests or causal analyses
  • Handle deployment, testing, versioning, monitoring, and drift detection
  • Partner closely with product managers and software engineers to integrate machine learning into product workflows

Requirements

  • 5 or more years of experience in applied data science, machine learning engineering, or data engineering
  • Demonstrated experience owning models in production, including building and shipping at least one model into a real product
  • Strong Python skills and familiarity with applied machine learning libraries for tabular data such as scikit-learn, XGBoost, LightGBM, statsmodels, or Prophet
  • Solid SQL expertise
  • Experience in supervised learning, forecasting, ranking, recommendation, or optimization using messy operational data
  • Experience with dbt, Snowflake modeling, feature pipelines, deployment, monitoring, and drift detection on AWS
  • Proven ability to quantify business impact and communicate technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
  • Must currently have the legal right to work in the UK without visa sponsorship

Qualifications

  • Experience in B2B SaaS
  • Previous use of coding agents on real modeling or engineering tasks, along with investments in evaluation scaffolding
  • Background in decision intelligence, forecasting, customer behavior modeling, workforce or route optimization, or operational intelligence products
  • Prior experience in a senior or lead scientist or engineer role guiding technical direction
  • Experience shipping Large Language Models or agentic workflows into a product

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Competitive company pension scheme with employer match
  • Generous holiday allowance and flexible time off plus UK bank holidays
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and parental leave policies
  • Ongoing learning resources
  • Comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme providing free 24/7 mental health, legal, and financial guidance
