Pleo operates in the spend management sector, offering financial solutions designed to help businesses handle company spending, invoicing, and expenses effectively. The company is currently seeking a remote Senior Backend Engineer - Payments to join its Bank Infrastructure team.
In this position, you will build and maintain the bank integration payment rails responsible for moving money securely and reliably at scale. The role involves ensuring every financial transaction is processed accurately, handling exceptions, and designing resilient systems that can withstand partner outages or network disruptions.
This role is ideal for a backend developer who has hands-on experience working with payment architectures, banking APIs, or financial messaging protocols, and who wants to contribute to mission-critical financial software.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain integrations with various payment partners and financial institutions across schemes such as SEPA, SWIFT, and Faster Payments
- Oversee the correctness and reliability of incoming and outgoing payment processing, handling settlement, reconciliation, and exception management
- Build distributed systems capable of gracefully recovering from partner outages, network errors, and edge cases in financial messaging
- Drive initiatives that enhance fault tolerance, system observability, and operational standards
- Partner with finance operations, product, and compliance groups to develop Pleo payment capabilities
- Conduct code reviews, handle post-mortems, and mentor engineering colleagues
- Manage technical debt proactively and guide the squad through system migrations
Requirements
- Practical background in building financial messaging formats, bank APIs, or payment scheme integrations
- Clear comprehension of end-to-end money flows including routing, initiation, settlement, and failure management
- Experience designing and running available, fault-tolerant distributed systems with proper observability and error recovery
- Proficiency in server-side technologies, specifically Java or Kotlin, utilizing microservices
- Familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, cloud platforms including AWS, Kubernetes, and monitoring tools like Grafana
- Ability to own production payment systems through operational incidents
- High proficiency in utilizing AI-assisted tools for software development, system design, and code generation
Qualifications
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and payment compliance topics including PSD2, sanctions screening, and anti-money laundering regulations
- Knowledge of customer funds safeguarding and money movement pipeline impacts
