Job Description
Azul operates entirely within the Java ecosystem, delivering platforms tailored for modern cloud enterprises and helping clients run faster and more cost-effective services. The engineering group develops Azul Platform Prime, which features the Falcon optimizing just-in-time compiler built on LLVM. This position gives a skilled developer the chance to direct major optimization sectors within a mature production compiler used by major organizations.
This opportunity fits a software specialist who wants to drive machine code generation forward and directly influence future capabilities. Daily work involves collaborating with a globally distributed network of compiler specialists to analyze real workloads, design enhancements, and measure execution speedups.
The person hired will take total ownership of assigned performance sectors from initial analysis through final validation. Responsibilities include shaping middle-end and back-end logic, enhancing execution quality on popular hardware architectures, and solving complex challenges reported by production users.
Responsibilities
- Manage the performance of Falcon end to end for specific workloads or optimization sectors
- Design, build, validate, and refine optimizations across the middle end and back end
- Enhance code generation quality for x86_64 and AArch64 architectures while introducing support for new hardware platforms
- Analyze complex performance hurdles identified by users and convert those insights into compiler enhancements
- Conduct code reviews and guide team members to elevate performance practices
Requirements
- Accumulate at least five years of professional background building optimizing or JIT compilers
- Demonstrate strong C++ design and programming proficiency within extensive codebases
- Show a proven history of shipping compiler optimizations that create measurable speed improvements
- Possess comprehensive understanding of compiler optimization theory and practical trade-offs
- Utilize advanced performance evaluation techniques including profilers, hardware counters, and assembly inspection
Qualifications
- Bring substantial background working with LLVM optimization passes or code generation, with LLVM commit access considered a bonus
- Have familiarity with managed language JIT engines such as HotSpot C2, Graal, V8, or .NET RyuJIT
- Understand x86_64 or AArch64 microarchitecture in depth
- Hold knowledge concerning Java Virtual Machine internals including garbage collection and deoptimization
- Earn a PhD in Computer Science or possess extensive academic compiler research background
Core Skills
