Job Description
Voltus seeks a Senior Corporate Counsel to join its expanding legal department. The company operates a distributed energy platform designed to assist commercial and industrial clients in maximizing the financial value of their operational flexibility across various energy markets. In this fully remote position within the United States, the attorney will focus on energy market transactions, complex partnership agreements, and regulatory compliance. This role suits an independent commercial lawyer with deep expertise in battery energy storage systems who thrives in a dynamic setting and possesses keen attention to detail.
Responsibilities
- Review, draft, negotiate, and interpret energy and commercial contracts including tolling agreements, power purchase agreements, and interconnection agreements
- Act as senior legal advisor for structuring and closing battery storage and other distributed energy resource transactions
- Partner with sales and partnership teams to evaluate legal risks and commercial structures
- Provide guidance on regulatory and market-specific issues across ISO and RTO markets such as PJM, ERCOT, MISO, and NYISO
- Develop and maintain contract templates, playbooks, training materials, and operational guidance
- Mentor junior legal team members regarding contract negotiations and energy industry practices
- Collaborate across departments to align contract terms with company objectives
- Establish processes for ongoing compliance with contractual obligations and workflow best practices
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials
- Seven to ten years of relevant legal experience, including significant work in the energy sector
- Direct background in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating battery energy storage system contracts and related transactions
- Extensive experience with complex commercial agreements, strategic partnerships, power purchase agreements, and product agreements
- Working knowledge of United States energy markets, ISO and RTO structures, and distributed energy regulatory frameworks
- Reside in the United States with authorization to work
Qualifications
- Experience with behind-the-meter or commercial and industrial sited storage
- Familiarity with storage participation in demand response or wholesale capacity and ancillary services markets
- Familiarity with software and tools including Google Drive, Salesforce, Adobe PDF, Ironclad, and DocuSign
