Job Description

Storyblok operates as a headless content management system that assists developers and marketers in publishing content across diverse channels including websites and applications, serving prominent brands like Oatly and Virgin Media O2.

The organization is currently seeking a Senior Database Reliability Engineer I to oversee the dependability, speed, and cost efficiency of its PostgreSQL data platform, with a primary focus on Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL. This position centers on reliability engineering rather than traditional administration, meaning the professional will manage query and index strategy, plan regressions during major upgrades, vacuum operations, connection management, zero-downtime schema changes, logical replication, and capacity modeling.

Operating within a fully remote environment with flexible schedules, the engineer will also collaborate with the infrastructure team on Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and security tooling, while participating in an on-call rotation. The role suits an experienced engineer who enjoys a shared-ownership model where backend teams manage their own queries and schemas while this position supplies the guardrails, tooling, and safety guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the reliability, performance, and scalability of the PostgreSQL platform, focusing on hot multi-tenant read paths
  • Direct zero-downtime major version upgrades and large-scale schema migrations while diagnosing and preventing execution plan regressions
  • Oversee operational health elements including vacuum strategies, table bloat, long-running transactions, connection pooling via RDS Proxy, lock contention, and logical replication
  • Evaluate backend team schema modifications and DDL statements for migration safety, lock behavior, and performance outcomes
  • Administer end-to-end backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes along with compliance auditing controls
  • Model data platform capacity and cost-efficiency parameters including Serverless v2 sizing and read replica strategies
  • Build cloud-native infrastructure and automation utilizing Terraform and participate in CI/CD pipeline management
  • Establish and monitor platform observability systems utilizing tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, and pg_stat_statements
  • Handle vulnerability management and cloud security triage utilizing tooling like Aikido
  • Participate in the on-call rotation, manage incident response, and conduct postmortems to determine root causes

Requirements

  • Minimum of seven years of professional experience in database reliability, database engineering, infrastructure, or site reliability engineering roles
  • Extensive hands-on experience owning production PostgreSQL environments, MVCC internals, EXPLAIN analysis, indexing, and configuration tuning
  • Demonstrated background working with Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and managed AWS database services
  • Proven history of executing zero-downtime upgrades and complex schema changes on large tables
  • Practical knowledge of physical and logical replication, data partitioning, read scaling, and disaster recovery validation
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code principles using Terraform on AWS
  • Strong Linux foundation accompanied by scripting capabilities in languages such as Python, Go, Bash, or Ruby
  • Familiarity with observability platforms, security practices including IAM and secrets management, and Git-based CI/CD workflows
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills tailored for a remote-first work environment
  • Availability to take part in an on-call rotation schedule

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Acquaintance with backend frameworks interacting with PostgreSQL, with a preference for Ruby on Rails alongside Python, Rust, or Elixir
  • Experience managing caching layers such as Redis or Memcached
  • Exposure to data warehousing and analytics pipelines including Snowflake, Redshift, ClickHouse, or Change Data Capture flows
  • Familiarity with container orchestration tools like EKS, ECS, or Fargate, NoSQL systems, vector databases, or AWS certifications

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Monthly remote work stipend covering home internet and electricity expenses
  • Initial home office hardware package including a laptop, monitor, and keyboard
  • Allowance for home office upgrades or a membership to a local co-working space
  • Paid sick leave, parental leave, 25 days of annual paid leave, and local national holidays
  • Personal development fund designated for courses, books, and conferences
  • Attendance at annual international team-building trips along with regular online get-togethers
