Job Description
Elastic builds search AI platforms designed to help users locate answers across structured and unstructured data at scale. The organization is looking for a Senior Engineer for its Competitive Benchmarking & Performance group to spearhead testing initiatives within the Elasticsearch Performance division. This position involves designing automated test environments, creating representative workloads, and analyzing how Elasticsearch stacks up against rival technologies.
This is a hands-on technical position focused on gathering performance metrics, assessing hardware or cloud constraints, and publishing findings in collaboration with engineering and content teams. Ideal candidates bring strong programming abilities in Python or similar languages, coupled with deep experience diagnosing performance bottlenecks in distributed databases, search infrastructure, or analytics platforms.
Responsibilities
- Manage prioritized competitive benchmarking initiatives spanning analytical, observability, search, vector, and hybrid retrieval workloads.
- Build and maintain automated test harnesses, query sets, datasets, and load profiles that mirror production usage.
- Design equitable system comparisons by documenting versions, configurations, resource budgets, and tuning decisions.
- Analyze latency distributions, resource consumption, throughput, and cost efficiency across workloads.
- Adapt and extend testing tools such as ClickBench, Elasticsearch Rally, and vector search benchmark frameworks.
- Investigate performance disparities using system metrics and profiling, collaborating with engineers to validate improvements.
- Assess self-managed and managed cloud deployments, including serverless offerings and scaling limits.
- Partner with content and engineering teams to publish reproducible benchmark reports detailing methodologies and tradeoffs.
- Work alongside product management and engineering to translate performance data into product enhancements.
Requirements
- Solid software engineering background with the ability to write maintainable automation and analysis tools in Python or a comparable programming language.
- Practical experience evaluating and troubleshooting performance in databases, distributed systems, or search engines.
- Deep expertise in at least one relevant domain such as vector retrieval, search, analytical databases, or observability systems, alongside the capability to learn new technologies quickly.
- Experience creating realistic workloads and datasets that incorporate concurrency, query patterns, and ingestion behavior.
- Sound experimental methodology, accounting for cache effects, warm-up periods, variability analysis, and measurement noise.
- Demonstrated ability to build reproducible test environments with thorough documentation of procedures and results.
- Clear communication and technical writing skills to convey complex findings and limitations.
- Strong collaboration skills to translate performance data into engineering recommendations.
Qualifications
- Familiarity with Elasticsearch, Lucene, Rally, ClickBench, or vector search benchmark frameworks.
- Experience measuring retrieval quality alongside throughput, resource utilization, and latency.
- Knowledge of cloud cost analysis and performance, including serverless and autoscaling architectures.
- Background in public technical writing, published benchmark research, or open-source contributions.
Core Skills
Benefits
