Job Description
Elastic, the Search AI Company, offers cloud-based solutions for search, security, and observability used by over half of the Fortune 500. The organization is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead competitive benchmarking initiatives within the Elasticsearch Performance team.
In this hands-on engineering position, the specialist will design representative workloads, build automated testing experiments, and evaluate how Elasticsearch compares against rival platforms. Key responsibilities involve exploring performance advantages and limitations, driving product enhancements, and producing transparent technical publications alongside content partners.
This role suits professionals with strong software automation skills and a background in analyzing distributed systems, databases, or search infrastructure. Qualified individuals will combine rigorous experimental judgment with clear technical communication to help users and engineering teams make informed technical choices.
Responsibilities
- Manage prioritized competitive benchmarking projects across search, vector retrieval, hybrid search, analytical workloads, and observability systems.
- Construct and maintain automated benchmark harnesses, datasets, query sets, and load profiles that mirror real-world utilization.
- Establish fair system comparisons by documenting system versions, configurations, tuning parameters, resource allocations, and functional variances.
- Assess latency distributions, operational throughput, resource usage, and cost efficiency.
- Utilize and modify evaluation frameworks like Elasticsearch Rally, ClickBench, and vector search tools.
- Analyze performance divergences through system metrics, profiling, and controlled trials in collaboration with engineering units.
- Review self-managed, cloud-based, and serverless deployments while accounting for scaling limitations.
- Publish reproducible benchmark items and clear technical documentation with engineering and content partners.
- Coordinate with product management and engineering to prioritize benchmark scope and translate findings into product upgrades.
Requirements
- Demonstrated software engineering abilities with proficiency in building maintainable analysis and automation utilities using Python or another relevant language.
- Practical background in performance evaluation and diagnosis within distributed architectures, search infrastructure, or databases.
- Deep expertise in at least one relevant domain such as search, vector retrieval, analytical databases, or observability systems, alongside the capacity to learn new systems.
- Experience formulating realistic datasets and workloads covering query patterns, concurrency, and ingestion behavior.
- Strong experimental judgment regarding repeated measurements, variability analysis, cache effects, and measurement noise.
- Familiarity with setting up reproducible testing environments while documenting configurations and results.
- Proficient technical writing and communication capabilities to articulate complex findings and limitations.
- Collaboration skills necessary to convert performance evidence into actionable engineering recommendations.
Qualifications
- Prior background working with Elasticsearch, Lucene, Rally, ClickBench, or vector search benchmark frameworks.
- Familiarity with evaluating retrieval quality alongside latency, throughput, and resource utilization.
- Knowledge of cloud performance and cost analysis including autoscaling and serverless platforms.
- Portfolio of public technical writing, open-source contributions, or published benchmark research.
Core Skills
Benefits
- Competitive financial compensation based on performance rather than previous salary.
- Health coverage options for employees and their families in numerous locations.
- Flexible calendars with adaptable locations and schedules for many roles.
- Generous yearly vacation allowances.
- Donation matching program up to $2000 or local currency equivalent.
- Up to 40 hours of paid time off yearly for volunteer activities.
- Paid parental leave of at least 16 weeks.
