Job Description
Kairos Power is an engineering and technology organization focused on advancing clean energy solutions through the commercialization of fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor technology. The enterprise seeks a Senior Engineer, Platform Security and Reliability to operate within an agile software and infrastructure group. This department directly supports the needs of internal design, research, and development teams by maintaining critical computing resources.
This individual contributor position centers on taking ownership of the security baselines and reliability postures for high-performance computing platforms and cloud environments. The professional in this role will build automation mechanisms, establish defensibility controls, manage workload migrations, and enforce cloud spending guardrails. Ideal candidates favor simple, proportionate technical designs constructed from well-supported standard technologies, ensuring that systems can be independently maintained by peers.
The successful applicant will manage identity frameworks, certificate lifecycles, and observability architectures while acting as an incident response leader for availability and security events. Responsibilities also include designing secure networking configurations, establishing compliance automation, and mentoring engineering peers. Collaboration spans across both software practitioners and non-software disciplines such as nuclear engineering, requiring clear communication regarding technical security requirements.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain security baselines for cloud and Linux platforms including operating system hardening and benchmark configurations
- Establish least-privilege access patterns across cloud accounts, Linux systems, and internal engineering services
- Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of machine image pipelines, secrets, and cryptographic certificates
- Automate compliance checks, configuration data collection, and control evidence reporting
- Define service health indicators, service-level objectives, and automated self-healing mechanisms for platform services
- Lead incident response operations for availability and security events while running blameless post-incident reviews
- Architect observability frameworks including logs, metrics, dashboards, and actionable alerting
- Operate and design secure networking configurations involving segmentation, firewalls, and zero-trust connectivity
- Execute legacy cloud workload migrations and manage the consolidation or retirement of redundant services
- Oversee cloud and high-performance computing cost visibility, budget alerts, and resource guardrails
- Write and maintain infrastructure and security automation scripts using Python or similar languages
Requirements
- At least five years of professional experience in platform, infrastructure, cloud, security, or site reliability engineering
- Demonstrated practical background in designing, securing, and operating production cloud infrastructure with strong AWS familiarity
- Solid Linux systems administration, hardening, and troubleshooting capabilities
- Experience implementing infrastructure automation through infrastructure as code and configuration management
- Practical execution of platform security controls covering access management, secrets handling, vulnerability tracking, and security monitoring
- Direct history of engineering monitoring, disaster recovery, and incident response procedures for production architectures
Qualifications
- Bachelor or advanced degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related technical discipline
- Experience designing new environments within Google Cloud
- Familiarity with cloud cost management, budget attribution, and resource guardrails
- Background securing high-performance computing environments such as Slurm, Open OnDemand, MPI, or GPU-enabled workloads
- Container security familiarity utilizing Docker and Apptainer
- Experience running self-hosted developer tools and enterprise services like GitHub Enterprise or relational databases
- Exposure to automated vulnerability patching across large equipment fleets
- Background in automating compliance evidence against established security frameworks
- Experience supporting scientific or engineering research users
