Job Description

Kairos Power seeks a Senior Engineer, Scientific Software and Developer Platform, Modeling and Simulation to join a specialized team supporting design, research, and development. Kairos Power is a nuclear energy technology and engineering company focused on commercializing the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor to support clean energy expansion.

This individual contributor position involves building developer tooling, scientific software, and delivery systems used by computational scientists and nuclear engineers. The role emphasizes Python and C++ development, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and high-performance computing workflows. Successful candidates will champion straightforward, proportionate designs and help elevate overall engineering practices through code reviews and mentoring.

The role operates in a fast-paced environment requiring strong collaboration with non-software engineers. Candidates must be comfortable managing software lifecycles from testing and documentation to ongoing maintenance, ensuring reliable toolsets for critical nuclear engineering applications.

Responsibilities

  • Establish software architecture and select appropriate data structures, algorithms, and interfaces
  • Manage CI/CD processes for internal software through GitHub Actions or comparable platforms
  • Build reproducible packaging and build pipelines for Conda environments, Python packages, and C++ binaries
  • Maintain Docker and Apptainer container patterns for high-performance computing and development environments
  • Implement software quality assurance automation and support compliance audits
  • Support high-performance computing workflows including Slurm, MPI, Open OnDemand, and GPU computing
  • Review peer software and mentor engineers to eliminate single-person dependencies

Requirements

  • Proficiency with Linux, Git, Bash, and SSH
  • Strong command of software design fundamentals such as algorithms, data structures, and object-oriented programming
  • Demonstrated experience developing complex technical, scientific, or engineering software in both Python and C++
  • Experience implementing quantitative algorithms, numerical methods, or computational modeling
  • Background in software architecture, problem decomposition, and interface definition
  • Familiarity with automated unit and integration testing frameworks like GoogleTest or PyTest

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, computational science, or a related field
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in computational science, physics, engineering, or a related discipline
  • Experience with containerization tools like Docker or Apptainer
  • Experience managing Python environments and packaging with Conda
  • Familiarity with build systems such as CMake and compiler dependency management
  • Experience with high-performance computing environments including Slurm, MPI, and GPU computing
  • Experience with documentation tools like Sphinx or Doxygen

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation packages
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents
  • Paid vacation
  • 401(k) retirement plan
