Job Description
This senior engineering role sits on the search platform behind AlphaSense's market intelligence products. The platform covers billions of documents, and the engineer would help keep search quick, dependable and suitable for enterprise clients who depend on it for research.
Day to day, the work involves distributed systems that process several hundred queries every second and return results within milliseconds. The engineer would architect and tune that infrastructure, guide a move from aging systems to a modern design with no service disruption, and set up monitoring, testing and release practices that surface problems before customers notice them.
Applicants should have run distributed systems in production for at least five years. The posting also expects familiarity with partitioning, replication and consistency models, a background in high-traffic or big-data platforms, and skill at finding and resolving slowdowns anywhere in the stack. Exposure to streaming data flows, data pipelines or database engine internals rounds out the expected profile.
Bonus experience includes working with search engines such as Vespa, Elasticsearch or Solr, operating Kubernetes and infrastructure as code, information retrieval or ranking work, blending keyword and vector retrieval, and tuning JVM applications. The role is listed as remote and open to people in India and Europe. The company was founded in 2011, is based in New York City, and reports more than 2,000 staff and over 6,000 enterprise clients. No salary or benefits are described in the posting.

Requirements
- Five or more years running distributed systems in production
- Hands-on work with high-volume data platforms
- Understanding of partitioning, replication and consistency models

- Ability to build observable systems with alerts and dashboards
Qualifications
- Practical use of Vespa, Elasticsearch or Solr
- Working knowledge of Kubernetes, custom resource definitions and infrastructure as code
- Interest in information retrieval, ranking or recommendation engines
- Experience blending lexical and vector retrieval
