Coinbase is seeking a Senior IT Automation Engineer to join its IT Tooling team, which operates within IT Support and Services. The company is dedicated to increasing economic freedom and requires employees to participate in periodic in-person working sessions known as surges. This position is structured as a remote role.
The person in this role will handle the technical architecture of automation projects within the IT Tooling platform. Responsibilities include defining system structure, integration patterns, and tooling across various platforms. The IT Tooling team builds automations for internal operations, including the Ask IT bot and self-service workflows for employee onboarding, offboarding, access reviews, and ticket triage.
This opportunity is well-suited for an engineer experienced in building complex automations and working independently within ambiguous environments. The role requires collaborating cross-functionally with Corporate Engineering, Security, and IAM teams, while partnering alongside regional IT personnel across AMER, EMEA, and APAC.
Responsibilities
- Manage the technical architecture of IT Tooling automations and guide system design decisions across Jira, Airflow, Temporal, and n8n.
- Formulate architecture standards and code review practices to elevate the team engineering bar.
- Act as the technical designated responsible individual for complex and high-impact automation projects from initial discovery to production delivery.
- Collaborate with Identity and Access Management, Corporate Engineering, and Security to clear technical roadblocks and take part in cross-functional architecture discussions.
- Create shared frameworks and reusable components to eliminate single points of failure across the platform.
- Draft architecture documentation and decision records to help the team scale independently.
- Organize individual workload independently to convert vaguely defined challenges into production-ready technical specifications.
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of professional background in systems engineering, automation, or IT engineering.
- Demonstrated experience taking ownership of architecture decisions, platform-level systems, or engineering standards.
- Extensive proficiency constructing and maintaining intricate automations using Temporal, Airflow, n8n, Workato, or Jira Automation.
- Strong proficiency in Git-based development practices including branching, code reviews, and CI/CD.
- Working familiarity with Google Workspace administration, Slack API, and Okta adequate for designing secure automation architecture.
- Competence in navigating ambiguous settings and turning loosely scoped problems into ready-to-produce technical specs.
- Ability to utilize generative AI responsibly while maintaining human oversight.
